Constructed around 1875 by Maharani Chandrabhanu Kumari of the Chauhan lineage, the Nagar Sagar Kund of Bundi stands quietly near the old Indra Market, narrating a story of foresight and graceful engineering. Known originally as Jamna Sagar and Ganga Sagar, these twin stepwells were not merely ornamental structures but lifelines built to address Bundi’s recurring water scarcity in the late nineteenth century.
Bundi, under the Hada Rajputs, became renowned for its baoris and kunds. In this arid region of Rajasthan, water architecture was both survival and art. The Nagar Sagar Kund reflects that philosophy perfectly. Two identical, symmetrical stepwells descend in precise geometry, their staircases moving downward in measured rhythm. Stone carvings and sculptural details frame the steps, transforming a utilitarian reservoir into a sacred architectural space.
Unlike the grand and deep baoris scattered across Bundi, these kunds were designed as urban water tanks — easily accessible for townspeople. They offered respite from the desert heat, storing precious monsoon water while also becoming a social and spiritual gathering space.
Today, the water no longer fills their depths as it once did, yet the twin structures continue to stand as testimony to Rajput engineering wisdom and the cultural sensitivity of a queen who understood the value of water. सन् 1875 के आसपास चौहान वंश की महारानी चन्द्रभानु कुमारी द्वारा निर्मित नागर सागर कुंड, बूंदी के पुराने इंद्रा बाज़ार के समीप स्थित, आज भी अपने स्थापत्य सौंदर्य और दूरदर्शिता की कहानी कहता है। मूलतः जमना सागर और गंगा सागर के नाम से प्रसिद्ध ये जुड़वाँ कुंड केवल जलाशय नहीं थे, बल्कि उस समय की जल समस्या का समाधान भी थे।
हाड़ा राजपूत शासकों के अधीन बूंदी अपनी बावड़ियों और कुंडों के लिए प्रसिद्ध रहा है। राजस्थान के इस अर्ध-शुष्क क्षेत्र में जल संरचना जीवन और कला दोनों थी। नागर सागर कुंड इसकी सुंदर मिसाल है। दोनों कुंड एक समान योजना में बने हैं, जिनकी सीढ़ियाँ सममित रूप से नीचे उतरती हैं। पत्थर की नक्काशी और मूर्तिकला इन्हें केवल जल संग्रह का साधन नहीं, बल्कि सांस्कृतिक और आध्यात्मिक स्थल बनाती है।
ये कुंड शहर के मध्य में बनाए गए ताकि आम जनता के लिए सुलभ रहें। ये गर्मी में राहत देते, वर्षा जल को संचित करते और सामाजिक मिलन स्थल भी बनते थे।
