In the crowded lanes of Begumpul, Meerut, stands a building that rarely announces its importance — yet carries within its walls a century of resistance, integrity, and silent service to the nation.
Nishkam Press, among the oldest printing presses of Meerut, traces its origins to 1927, when its foundation was laid at Swamipara by Shri Madan Mohan Ji — a revolutionary whose life choices spoke louder than slogans. Later, in 1939, the press shifted to Begumpul, where it became both a workplace and a witness to history.
Selected for the Indian Civil Services, Madan Mohan Ji walked away from a position of immense power after confronting British racism — choosing dignity over authority. He even relinquished his surname, believing that names should never divide people. From this very press, he published The Light House, using print as a tool of awakening during the freedom movement.
Specialising in confidential printing, Nishkam Press functioned quietly yet steadfastly for decades. Until the pandemic, it remained fully operational under the stewardship of his grandson, Hemant. Today, the nearly 100-year-old Sher-wali Kothi continues to be home to the family — a living heritage occupied by multiple generations, bound not just by blood but by shared values.
Nishkam Press is not merely a building or a business. It is a reminder that freedom was also built in small rooms, through ink, paper, and uncompromising conscience.

बेगमपुल, मेरठ की हलचल भरी गलियों में स्थित निष्काम प्रेस एक ऐसी विरासत है, जो शोर नहीं मचाती — बल्कि इतिहास को सहेज कर रखती है।
1927 में स्वामीपारा में स्थापित यह प्रेस, स्वतंत्रता सेनानी श्री मदन मोहन जी की दूरदर्शिता का परिणाम था। 1939 में यह बेगमपुल स्थानांतरित हुई। आईसीएस के लिए चयनित होने के बावजूद, ब्रिटिश भेदभाव का सामना करने के बाद उन्होंने पद और सत्ता दोनों को त्याग दिया। उनका विश्वास था कि नाम और पद समाज को बाँटते हैं — इसी कारण उन्होंने अपना उपनाम भी छोड़ दिया।
यहीं से The Light House का प्रकाशन हुआ, जिसने स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन के दौरान विचारों को स्वर दिया। दशकों तक गोपनीय मुद्रण में कार्यरत यह प्रेस, महामारी से पहले तक पूरी तरह सक्रिय रही। आज भी लगभग सौ वर्ष पुरानी ‘शेर वाली कोठी’ में उनका परिवार इस धरोहर को जीवित रखे हुए है।
