This striking red-brick structure of the Public Works Department (PWD) in Meerut carries on its façade the year 1901, marking its construction during the British era. Built in Indo-Saracenic style with pointed arches and symmetrical corridors, the building stands as a testimony to the institutional expansion of the PWD in colonial India.
Meerut, being a major Commissionerate city, became an early hub for PWD activities after the department’s establishment in 1854 under Lord Dalhousie. The 1901 PWD building reflects both administrative importance and architectural finesse, representing how infrastructure planning and governance were centralized during that period.
Even today, this heritage office remains functional, connecting Meerut’s living history with its colonial past.

मेरठ का यह लाल ईंटों से बना ऐतिहासिक भवन, जिस पर 1901 अंकित है, ब्रिटिश कालीन स्थापत्य और प्रशासनिक ढाँचे की एक अनमोल धरोहर है। नुकीले मेहराबों और संतुलित गलियारों वाला यह भवन औपनिवेशिक काल के इंडो-सरैसैनिक शैली का उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण है।
1854 में लॉर्ड डलहौज़ी के समय पब्लिक वर्क्स डिपार्टमेंट (PWD) की स्थापना के बाद मेरठ जैसे आयुक्तालय नगरों में इस विभाग का दायरा बढ़ा। 1901 का यह भवन उसी ऐतिहासिक विस्तार और मेरठ की प्रशासनिक महत्ता को दर्शाता है।
