In the heart of Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh, stands Shahzadi Ka Roza—a 15th-century memorial etched in grey sandstone on a 12-foot-high podium. Its double-storied façade with arched recesses and curved brackets frames a chamber holding two sarcophagi, embodying a story of love and tragedy.
According to local legend, Mehrunissa, daughter of the Hakim (governor) of Chanderi, fell in love with a commoner—an army chief. Her father strongly disapproved of their relationship and secretly orchestrated the chief’s death by sending soldiers to the battlefield with orders to assassinate him.
The army chief, although seriously injured, managed to escape the battlefield and rode back to Chanderi. But fate was merciless—he collapsed and died at the very spot where the Roza now stands. Heartbroken, Mehrunissa rushed to him, only to witness his last breath. Overcome with grief, she ended her life beside him.
In sorrow, the Hakim buried the two together and built this monument as their resting place. Around it, he had a pond dug to symbolize their impossible love—today long vanished, replaced by farmland. The Roza remains a testament to love lost, sacrifice, and the haunting beauty of Chanderi’s past.

मध्यप्रदेश के चंदेरी में स्थित शाहज़ादी का रोज़ा 15वीं शताब्दी का एक स्मारक है, जो 12 फीट ऊँचे मंच पर खड़ा है। ग्रे बलुआ पत्थर से निर्मित इस ढांचे का द्विस्तरीय अग्रभाग मेहराबदार सज्जाओं और सांपाकार ब्रैकेट्स से सुसज्जित है। भीतर के कक्ष में दो कब्रें हैं—प्रेम और त्रासदी की गवाही।
किंवदंती के अनुसार, चंदेरी के हाकिम (गवर्नर) की पुत्री मेहरुन्निसा एक आम इंसान—सेना प्रमुख—से प्रेम करने लगी थी। पिता ने इस रिश्ते को अस्वीकार किया और गुप्त रूप से सिपाहियों को आदेश दिया कि युद्धभूमि में सेना प्रमुख की हत्या कर दी जाए।
सेना प्रमुख गंभीर रूप से घायल होने के बावजूद युद्ध से भागकर चंदेरी लौटे, पर लौटते ही वहीं ढह पड़े और मृत्यु को प्राप्त हुए—ठीक उसी स्थल पर जहाँ आज यह रोज़ा खड़ा है। यह ख़बर सुनकर मेहरुन्निसा दौड़ीं, लेकिन केवल अपने प्रिय के अंतिम क्षण देख सकीं। शोकाकुल होकर उन्होंने भी वहीं अपनी जान दे दी।
गहरे दुःख में, हाकिम ने दोनों को साथ दफनाया और यह स्मारक निर्मित कराया। उनके चारों ओर प्रेम का प्रतीक एक तालाब भी खुदवाया गया था, जो अब लुप्त होकर खेतों में बदल चुका है। शाहज़ादी का रोज़ा आज भी अधूरे प्रेम और त्याग की अमर कहानी सुनाता है।
