Shri Ganesh Temple, Jhansi – Where Rani Lakshmibai’s Journey Began.
In the heart of Jhansi’s old city, within the bustling Ganesh Bazaar, stands the historic Shri Ganesh Temple. Built around the 1760s CE, this two-storied temple is not only a spiritual center but also a silent witness to one of India’s greatest heroines.
It was here in 1842 that Raja Gangadhar Rao of Jhansi married a young Manikarnika Tambe. Following Marathi tradition, she received a new name after the wedding — Rani Lakshmibai, the warrior queen whose bravery lit the Revolt of 1857.
The temple’s architecture is simple yet striking, with its arched dome-like roof and intricately decorated interiors. At its sanctum rests a unique marble idol of Lord Ganesh. What makes this idol extraordinary is its trunk bending to the right (Dakshinabhimukhi form). Such idols are rare and considered highly powerful, associated with energy, strength, and strict rituals of worship. Unlike left-bending trunks, which symbolize calmness and are common in households, right-bending Ganesh idols are believed to embody fiery energy and are usually housed in temples like this.
While debate continues over whether the temple was built by Vishwas Rao Laxman, the Subedar of Jhansi under the Marathas, or by Raghunathrao Newalkar, founder of the Newalkar dynasty, its significance remains unquestioned. Even today, it is not just a place of worship but a cherished community hub of Jhansi.

श्री गणेश मंदिर, झाँसी – जहाँ से शुरू हुई रानी लक्ष्मीबाई की कहानी
झाँसी के पुराने शहर की संकरी गलियों और गणेश बाज़ार में स्थित है ऐतिहासिक श्री गणेश मंदिर। 1760 के दशक में बना यह मंदिर केवल आस्था का केन्द्र ही नहीं, बल्कि भारत की वीरांगना रानी लक्ष्मीबाई की जीवन-गाथा का आरंभिक साक्षी भी है।
यहीं पर 1842 में झाँसी के राजा गंगाधर राव ने मणिकर्णिका तांबे से विवाह किया था। विवाह के बाद मराठी रीति-रिवाजों के अनुसार उनका नाम रखा गया – रानी लक्ष्मीबाई।
मंदिर की दो-मंज़िली संरचना और गुम्बदनुमा छत इसकी स्थापत्य खूबसूरती को दर्शाती है। गर्भगृह में विराजमान संगमरमर की गणेश प्रतिमा इस मंदिर की सबसे विशेष धरोहर है। इसकी सूंड दाहिनी ओर मुड़ी हुई (दक्षिणाभिमुखी गणपति) है। यह रूप अत्यंत दुर्लभ माना जाता है और इसे अपार शक्ति तथा सिद्धि का प्रतीक माना जाता है। ऐसी प्रतिमाएँ घरों में प्रायः नहीं होतीं, क्योंकि इनके पूजन के लिए कठोर विधि-विधान आवश्यक होते हैं। मंदिरों में इनका होना विशेष आध्यात्मिक महत्व रखता है।
निर्माणकर्ता को लेकर मतभेद है — कुछ इतिहासकार इसे मराठा सुबेदार विश्वास राव लक्ष्मण का कार्य मानते हैं, जबकि कुछ इसे रघुनाथराव नेवालकर द्वारा निर्मित मानते हैं। किंतु इसकी ऐतिहासिक और धार्मिक महत्ता निर्विवाद है। यह आज भी झाँसी की पहचान और आस्था का केन्द्र बना हुआ है।
