In the late 19th century, Meerut quietly witnessed the presence of one of India’s greatest spiritual leaders—Swami Vivekananda.
When Swami Ji’s brother-disciple Swami Akhandananda fell gravely ill in October 1890, both were brought from Rishikesh to Meerut. Initially, Vivekananda stayed at the home of Dr. Trailokyanath Ghosh for treatment, but soon shifted to the grand haveli known as ‘Seth Ji ka Baghicha’—Ram Bagh (तालाब वाली कोठी), arranged by his well-wisher Yagneshwar Babu. For over two and a half months, Ram Bagh became his residence, where he guided disciples, recited Sanskrit scriptures, and built an atmosphere of spiritual learning.
But his days in Meerut were also marked by intense study. Just a few years earlier, in 1886, the British had built the Town Hall on land leased by Sheikh Ghulam Mohiuddin of Meerut’s Bhayyaji family (Lalkurti). In 1892, it became the seat of the Meerut Municipal Committee, and within it was founded the Sir Lyall Library by Mr. Kalipad Bose. This library soon became a hub of intellectual life, later welcoming luminaries like Mahatma Gandhi, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the Ali brothers, and Jawaharlal Nehru.
During his stay, Swami Vivekananda visited this library daily. To the amazement of the librarian, K.P. Bose, he would finish an entire book in a single day, returning it the next morning. So impressed was Bose that he asked Vivekananda to sign the books he read—though sadly, those signed volumes are no longer preserved.
Thus, between Ram Bagh’s quiet haveli and the Town Hall’s library at Ghantaghar, Vivekananda’s Meerut sojourn became a blend of spiritual reflection and scholarly pursuit. Even years later, in letters from America (1894) and England (1895), he fondly remembered Meerut and suggested it as a future Vedanta center.
Meerut, therefore, proudly holds the memory of the months when Swami Vivekananda lived here, studied here, and envisioned India’s awakening.

उन्नीसवीं सदी के अंतिम वर्षों में स्वामी विवेकानंद का आगमन मेरठ में हुआ, जिसने इस शहर की स्मृतियों में एक अमिट अध्याय जोड़ दिया।
अक्टूबर 1890 में जब उनके गुरु भाई स्वामी अखंडानंद गंभीर रूप से बीमार पड़ गए, तब दोनों को ऋषिकेश से मेरठ लाया गया। प्रारम्भ में स्वामी जी का उपचार डॉक्टर त्रैलोक्यनाथ घोष के घर पर हुआ, पर स्वास्थ्य लाभ के बाद वे रेलवे रोड स्थित भव्य कोठी ‘सेठ जी का बगीचा’—रामबाग (तालाब वाली कोठी) में रहने लगे। यहाँ उन्होंने ढाई महीने से अधिक समय बिताया, शिष्यों को संस्कृत ग्रंथ सुनाए, और आध्यात्मिक शिक्षा का वातावरण बनाया।
इसी दौरान उनकी विद्या-पिपासा उन्हें ले गई घंटाघर स्थित टाउनहॉल तक। ब्रिटिश काल में, 1886 में बनी यह इमारत, जिसे शेख गुलाम मोहीउद्दीन (भैयाजी परिवार, लालकुर्ती) ने नगर पालिका को पट्टे पर दी थी, 1892 में नगर पालिका का मुख्यालय बनी। यहीं पर स्थापित हुई सर लायल लाइब्रेरी, जिसकी नींव सरकारी नेता श्री कैलापद बोस ने रखी थी। यह पुस्तकालय बाद में महात्मा गांधी, सर सैयद अहमद ख़ान, अली बंधु और जवाहरलाल नेहरू जैसे नेताओं का साक्षी बना।
स्वामी विवेकानंद प्रतिदिन यहाँ से एक पुस्तक मंगवाते और अगले दिन उसे पढ़कर लौटा देते। लाइब्रेरियन के.पी. बोस उनकी अद्भुत अध्ययन क्षमता से चकित रह जाते। उन्होंने स्वामी जी से पुस्तकों पर हस्ताक्षर करने का अनुरोध भी किया था, किंतु वे पुस्तकें आज वहाँ उपलब्ध नहीं हैं।
इस प्रकार, रामबाग की कोठी और टाउनहॉल का पुस्तकालय, दोनों ही उनके मेरठ प्रवास के साक्षी बने—एक ने उनके आध्यात्मिक जीवन को सँवारा, दूसरे ने उनकी ज्ञान-पिपासा को तृप्त किया। विदेश प्रवास के वर्षों बाद भी, 1894 और 1895 में लिखे पत्रों में स्वामी जी ने मेरठ का उल्लेख किया और यहाँ वेदांत केंद्र खोलने का सुझाव दिया।
यह गौरवपूर्ण तथ्य है कि मेरठ कभी स्वामी विवेकानंद का निवास और अध्ययन-स्थल रहा, जहाँ से उनकी आत्मा और विचार दोनों ही प्रबल हुए।
