Standing tall at 100 feet, the Teli ka Mandir is not just the tallest structure in Gwalior Fort—it’s a stunning fusion of North and South Indian architecture. Built in the 8th or 9th century during the reign of the Gurjar-Pratihara king Mihir Bhoj, this temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Garuda form.
Its name sparks many legends—some say it was funded by oil merchants (Telis), others link it to the Telanga region or Telanga Brahmins brought by the Rashtrakuta king Govinda III. The temple features Shaivite, Vaishnavite, and Shakta carvings, a Dravidian-style shikhara, and an intricately designed sanctum.
Restored in the British era by Major J.B. Keith, it was once used as a soda factory and coffee shop! Today, it stands under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India, echoing stories of faith, power, and cultural fusion.

ग्वालियर किले में 100 फीट की ऊंचाई पर स्थित तेली का मंदिर न केवल किले का सबसे ऊंचा स्मारक है, बल्कि यह उत्तर व दक्षिण भारतीय वास्तुकला का अद्भुत संगम भी है। इसे 8वीं-9वीं शताब्दी में गुर्जर-प्रतिहार वंश के शासक मिहिर भोज के काल में बनवाया गया था और यह भगवान विष्णु के गरुड़ रूप को समर्पित है।
इसके नाम को लेकर कई कथाएं हैं—कुछ कहते हैं कि इसे तेली (तेल व्यापारी) समुदाय ने बनवाया, तो कुछ इसे तेलंगाना क्षेत्र या वहां से आए ब्राह्मणों से जोड़ते हैं। इसकी दीवारों पर शैव, वैष्णव और शक्त परंपराओं की सुंदर नक्काशी देखी जा सकती है।
ब्रिटिश काल में मेजर जे.बी. कीथ द्वारा इसका पुनर्निर्माण हुआ और एक समय यह मंदिर परिसर सोडा फैक्ट्री और कॉफी शॉप के रूप में भी इस्तेमाल हुआ था। अब यह भारतीय पुरातत्व सर्वेक्षण द्वारा संरक्षित है।
