The Mofussilite – Meerut’s Forgotten Voice of the 19th Century.
In the mid-1800s, Meerut was home to a bold newspaper called The Mofussilite, founded by Australian-born lawyer, writer, and editor John Lang. First published in 1845, it championed the voice of the “mofussil” — the smaller towns and provincial areas outside big colonial cities.
John Lang was no ordinary editor. Known for his sharp pen and fearless opinions, he openly criticised the East India Company and exposed injustices in colonial rule. But perhaps his most remarkable role was as the legal counsel for Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi. He represented her in her dispute against the British over the annexation of Jhansi — a case that made him a hero in the eyes of many Indians.
Lang wrote regularly for The Mofussilite, the newspaper he himself founded in the 1845 in Meerut, using it as a platform to voice sharp critiques of the East India Company and champion the concerns of India’s provincial towns.
The Mofussilite was published from several North Indian cities — including Meerut, Agra, Delhi, and Ambala — and became famous for bypassing colonial censorship. When certain articles were too controversial for India, Lang sent them to be printed in British newspapers and then re-published them in India, safe from legal action.
John Lang spent his final years in Mussoorie, where he passed away in 1864. He is buried in the historic Camel’s Back Cemetery, a site that still stands as a reminder of his unique legacy as a fearless voice for justice. His grave had been lost for almost a century until it was sought out and discovered by the writer Ruskin Bond.
While the exact location of its Meerut office remains unknown, the legacy of The Mofussilite survives in archives in India and abroad. For Meerut’s history lovers, this is a story worth remembering — our city was once home to a newspaper that dared to speak truth to power.

द मॉफुस्सिलाइट – 19वीं सदी में मेरठ की भूली-बिसरी आवाज़
19वीं सदी के मध्य में, मेरठ से एक बेखौफ़ अख़बार निकलता था — द मॉफुस्सिलाइट। इसे ऑस्ट्रेलिया में जन्मे वकील, लेखक और संपादक जॉन लैंग ने 1845 में शुरू किया था। इसका मकसद था “मॉफ़ुस्सिल” यानी बड़े औपनिवेशिक शहरों से दूर छोटे कस्बों और प्रांतीय इलाकों की आवाज़ को बुलंद करना।
जॉन लैंग सिर्फ़ अख़बार के संपादक नहीं थे, बल्कि एक निडर आवाज़ थे जो ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी की नीतियों की खुली आलोचना करते थे। उनकी सबसे ऐतिहासिक भूमिका थी झाँसी की रानी लक्ष्मीबाई के वकील के रूप में। ब्रिटिश द्वारा झाँसी के विलय के मामले में उन्होंने रानी का पक्ष रखा, जिससे वे भारतीयों की नज़रों में एक नायक बन गए।
लैंग ने द मॉफुस्सिलाइट में नियमित रूप से लिखा — यह अख़बार उन्होंने 1845 के दशक में मेरठ से शुरू किया था। उन्होंने इसे ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी की कड़ी आलोचना करने और भारत के प्रांतीय कस्बों की समस्याओं को सामने लाने का मंच बनाया।
द मॉफुस्सिलाइट मेरठ, आगरा, दिल्ली और अंबाला जैसे कई शहरों से प्रकाशित हुआ और औपनिवेशिक सेंसरशिप को चकमा देने के लिए मशहूर था। जो लेख भारत में छापना मुश्किल होता, वे ब्रिटेन के अख़बारों में छपवाकर फिर भारत में प्रकाशित किए जाते।
जॉन लैंग ने अपने अंतिम वर्ष मसूरी में बिताए, जहाँ 1864 में उनका निधन हुआ। उन्हें ऐतिहासिक कैमेल्स बैक कब्रिस्तान में दफनाया गया, जो आज भी उनकी अनोखी विरासत का प्रतीक है। उनकी कब्र लगभग एक सदी तक गुमनामी में रही, जब तक कि लेखक रस्किन बॉन्ड ने उसे खोजकर ढूंढ़ नहीं निकाला।
हालाँकि मेरठ में इसके दफ़्तर का सही पता आज भी रहस्य है, लेकिन इसकी विरासत भारत और विदेश के अभिलेखागार में जीवित है। मेरठ के इतिहास प्रेमियों के लिए यह गर्व की बात है कि कभी हमारे शहर से ऐसा अख़बार निकलता था, जो सत्ता से सच कहने की हिम्मत रखता था।
