In the heart of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, stands the magnificent Asafi Mosque within the grand complex of the Bara Imambara. Commissioned in 1784 by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula, this monumental work was not merely an architectural marvel—it was a humanitarian response to a devastating famine. Thousands of labourers were employed in its construction, turning despair into dignity through work.
Designed by the brilliant architect Kifayat-ullah, the mosque showcases elegant domes, intricate stucco work, and two tall minarets that pierce the skyline of old Lucknow. The adjoining Bhool Bhulaiya—a labyrinth of corridors and passages—still puzzles visitors and guards the sanctity of the mosque.
But beyond beauty lies a haunting silence. After the Revolt of 1857, the British seized the complex and turned parts of it, including this mosque, into an armoury for gunpowder and ammunition. For 27 long years, from 1857 to 1884, no prayers were offered here. Only when the British vacated the site did the azaan echo once again within its walls.
Today, the Asafi Mosque stands as a symbol of faith’s endurance—a place where silence once ruled, but devotion ultimately triumphed. It remains one of Lucknow’s most revered mosques, hosting the city’s largest Friday congregations and festive Eid prayers.

लखनऊ (उत्तर प्रदेश) के दिल में स्थित भव्य आसिफी मस्जिद, बड़ा इमामबाड़ा परिसर का एक अहम हिस्सा है। इसे नवाब आसिफ-उद-दौला ने 1784 में अकाल-राहत कार्य के रूप में बनवाया था, ताकि लोगों को रोज़गार और सम्मान मिल सके। कहा जाता है कि हजारों मजदूरों ने इस मस्जिद और इमामबाड़े के निर्माण में भाग लिया।
वास्तुकार किफायतुल्लाह द्वारा निर्मित यह मस्जिद अपनी शानदार मीनारों, गुंबदों और बिना बीम की छत के लिए प्रसिद्ध है। इसके पास स्थित प्रसिद्ध भूलभुलैया आज भी अपने रहस्यमय गलियारों और रास्तों से हर आगंतुक को चकित कर देती है।
परंतु इस इमारत ने एक ऐसा दौर भी देखा, जब यहाँ 27 वर्षों तक नमाज़ अदा नहीं की गई। 1857 की क्रांति के बाद अंग्रेजों ने इस परिसर पर कब्ज़ा कर लिया और इसे गोला-बारूद के भंडार के रूप में प्रयोग किया। जब 1884 में यह जगह पुनः नमाज़ के लिए खोली गई, तब जाकर इसकी दीवारों में फिर से अज़ान की गूँज सुनाई दी।
आज आसिफी मस्जिद लखनऊ की पहचान है — जहाँ श्रद्धा और इतिहास एक साथ सांस लेते हैं। जुमे और ईद की नमाज़ में यहाँ हजारों नमाज़ी एकत्र होते हैं, मानो इतिहास फिर से जीवंत हो उठता हो।
