The Timeless Heartbeat of the Blue City
Standing at the very heart of old Jodhpur, the Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower) has quietly measured the city’s rhythm for more than a century. Commissioned during the reign of Maharaja Sardar Singh of Marwar, its construction began around 1909, reflecting the ruler’s vision of introducing modern civic utilities to a traditional desert city.
Rising to nearly 70 feet, the tower is built entirely of locally quarried red sandstone, the architectural signature of Jodhpur. Its five-tiered structure is rich in detail — the first and second tiers feature elaborately carved stone balconies, while the fourth tier houses the iconic clock, set within segmental pediments and framed by bold Roman numerals. The clock mechanism was imported from England and sourced from the same British maker associated with London’s Big Ben, making it a rare example of global craftsmanship integrated into a princely Indian city.
Crowned with a chhatri and dome, the Ghanta Ghar is not just a monument but the anchor around which life unfolded. At its base grew the bustling Sardar Market, named after the Maharaja himself, which remains one of Jodhpur’s oldest and most vibrant bazaars. Even today, the sounds of trade, the scent of spices, and the movement of people echo the same rhythm the clock once set for the city.

नीले शहर की धड़कन
जोधपुर के पुराने शहर के मध्य स्थित घंटा घर एक सदी से अधिक समय से शहर की गति और जीवन को मापता आ रहा है। महाराजा सरदार सिंह के शासनकाल में, लगभग 1909 में इसका निर्माण आरंभ हुआ, जिसका उद्देश्य पारंपरिक शहर को आधुनिक सार्वजनिक व्यवस्था से जोड़ना था।
लगभग 70 फीट ऊँचा यह टॉवर स्थानीय लाल बलुआ पत्थर से निर्मित है। इसकी पाँच मंज़िली संरचना में पहले और दूसरे स्तर पर नक्काशीदार पत्थर की बालकनियाँ हैं, जबकि चौथे स्तर पर स्थापित घड़ी, खंडित मेहराबों के भीतर और रोमन अंकों से सजी हुई है। यह घड़ी इंग्लैंड से मंगाई गई थी और उसी ब्रिटिश निर्माता से जुड़ी मानी जाती है जिसने लंदन के बिग बेन के लिए घड़ियाँ बनाई थीं, जिससे इसका ऐतिहासिक महत्व और बढ़ जाता है।
शीर्ष पर छत्री और गुम्बद से सुसज्जित घंटा घर के चारों ओर विकसित हुआ सरदार मार्केट, आज भी जोधपुर के सामाजिक और व्यापारिक जीवन का केंद्र है। मसालों, वस्त्रों और हस्तशिल्प की चहल-पहल इस स्थान को जीवंत बनाती है।
