There are buildings that dominate skylines… and then there are buildings that dominate history.
Hidden among the tall deodar trees of Shimla’s heritage zone stands Gorton Castle — not merely a structure of stone, but a silent witness to the administrative machinery of the British Empire in India.
The land on which it stands once belonged to Mr. Gorton in the 1840s. By 1900, the British Government acquired it to construct a grand Civil Secretariat for their summer capital. Designed by Sir Swinton Jacob and completed in 1904, the building emerged as one of the finest examples of Neo-Gothic architecture blended with Indo-Saracenic detailing.
Red sandstone walls meet grey stone masonry, crowned by a striking red galvanized iron roof. Intricate Rajasthani jali patterns soften the Gothic rigidity. Under Lord Curzon’s tenure, and with engineering inputs from Major H.F. Chesney, the design was refined to suit Shimla’s terrain and climate.
Every summer, decisions shaping the subcontinent were drafted within these walls.
Even after Independence, the building retained administrative importance. In 2014, a devastating fire damaged significant portions, but restoration efforts revived its historic character. Today, it functions as the office of the Accountant General of Himachal Pradesh — still serving governance, though now under a different flag.
Restricted yet majestic, Gorton Castle remains one of Shimla’s most powerful colonial-era landmarks — where stone still whispers governance, power, and time.

गोर्टन कैसल, शिमला – राज का मौन सचिवालय
कुछ इमारतें केवल दिखती हैं… और कुछ इतिहास को आकार देती हैं।
शिमला की विरासत घाटी में देवदार के ऊँचे वृक्षों के बीच खड़ा गोर्टन कैसल केवल पत्थरों का ढांचा नहीं, बल्कि ब्रिटिश साम्राज्य के प्रशासनिक इतिहास का साक्षी है।
1840 के दशक में यह भूमि मिस्टर गोर्टन से जुड़ी थी। वर्ष 1900 में इसे ब्रिटिश सरकार ने अपने ग्रीष्मकालीन सचिवालय के लिए अधिग्रहित किया। सर स्विंटन जैकब द्वारा डिज़ाइन की गई यह इमारत 1904 में पूर्ण हुई और नव-गॉथिक शैली तथा इंडो-सरैसेनिक प्रभाव का अद्भुत संगम बनकर उभरी।
लाल बलुआ पत्थर, धूसर पत्थर की दीवारें और लाल जस्ती लोहे की छत इसे विशिष्ट पहचान देती हैं। राजस्थानी जाली कार्य इसकी भव्यता में कोमलता जोड़ता है। लॉर्ड कर्ज़न के कार्यकाल में तथा मेजर एच.एफ. चेसनी के अभियान्त्रिक सहयोग से इसे शिमला की भौगोलिक परिस्थितियों के अनुसार रूप दिया गया।
यहीं से गर्मियों में पूरे भारत के प्रशासनिक निर्णय लिए जाते थे।
स्वतंत्रता के बाद भी इसकी प्रशासनिक भूमिका बनी रही। वर्ष 2014 में लगी आग से इसे भारी क्षति पहुँची, परन्तु पुनर्स्थापन के बाद इसकी ऐतिहासिक गरिमा पुनः स्थापित हुई। आज यह हिमाचल प्रदेश के महालेखाकार का कार्यालय है।
गोर्टन कैसल आज भी शासन, समय और इतिहास की गूंज को अपने भीतर संजोए खड़ा है।
