In the sacred landscape of Hastinapur — once described in the Mahabharata as the capital of the Kuru kingdom — stands a quiet shrine linked to one of the epic’s most powerful and tragic heroes: Karna.
Located near the old channel of the Ganga, today known as Budhi Ganga, the Karna Temple is a modest structure. Yet its silence carries centuries of devotion. Local tradition holds that the Shivling enshrined here was established by Danveer Karna himself. It is believed that after taking his ritual bath in the Ganga, Karna would worship Lord Shiva at this very spot and donate gold daily in charity.
The Mahabharata celebrates Karna as the embodiment of generosity. The famous episode of donating his Kavach and Kundal to Indra is deeply embedded in the epic tradition. While there is no archaeological evidence proving that the present temple structure dates back to the Mahabharata period, Hastinapur itself has yielded Painted Grey Ware remains, connecting it to early Iron Age settlements often associated with the epic era.
The temple we see today has been renovated in modern times, particularly after Independence when Hastinapur saw renewed attention. What survives here is not just a structure of brick and stone, but a continuity of faith — where myth, memory and history meet.

महाभारत में वर्णित कुरु साम्राज्य की राजधानी हस्तिनापुर की पावन धरती पर स्थित है कर्ण मंदिर — एक ऐसा स्थल जो दानवीर कर्ण की लोककथाओं से जुड़ा हुआ है।
बूढ़ी गंगा के प्राचीन तट के समीप स्थित यह छोटा सा मंदिर आज भी श्रद्धालुओं के लिए आस्था का केंद्र है। स्थानीय मान्यता के अनुसार यहाँ स्थापित शिवलिंग स्वयं कर्ण द्वारा स्थापित किया गया था। ऐसा विश्वास है कि गंगा स्नान के पश्चात कर्ण यहाँ भगवान शिव की पूजा करते थे और प्रतिदिन स्वर्ण दान किया करते थे।
महाभारत में वर्णित कर्ण की उदारता — विशेषकर कवच और कुण्डल दान की कथा — भारतीय परंपरा में अमर है। हालांकि वर्तमान मंदिर के महाभारत कालीन होने का कोई प्रत्यक्ष पुरातात्विक प्रमाण उपलब्ध नहीं है, परन्तु हस्तिनापुर से प्राप्त पेंटेड ग्रे वेयर अवशेष इसे प्राचीन लौह युगीन सभ्यता से जोड़ते हैं।
आज का कर्ण मंदिर आधुनिक काल में पुनर्निर्मित स्वरूप में है, पर यहाँ की आस्था और परंपरा सदियों पुरानी है। यह स्थान इतिहास और लोकविश्वास के संगम का जीवंत उदाहरण है।
