Rising with quiet authority inside Mandore Gardens, the cenotaph of Maharaja Ajit Singh is not just a memorial—it is a powerful architectural proclamation of Marwar’s royal spirit. Carved entirely from red sandstone, this monumental dewal was commissioned around 1793 AD by his son, Maharaja Bakht Singh, in honour of one of Marwar’s most assertive and influential rulers.
Unlike the usual domed chhatris seen across Rajasthan, this structure takes the form of a soaring Hindu temple shikhara, making it the tallest and grandest cenotaph in Mandore. Every surface is alive with craftsmanship. The pillars, walls, and ceilings are densely carved with deities, floral patterns, and celestial apsaras captured in graceful dance. The inner ceiling, adorned with these apsaras, reflects an extraordinary blend of devotion, rhythm, and artistic finesse, influenced by Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist traditions.
Maharaja Ajit Singh (1679–1724 AD) ruled Marwar during a turbulent period and is remembered for his resistance against Mughal authority, particularly during Aurangzeb’s reign. This cenotaph stands today as a stone-etched testament to his power, legacy, and the Marwar rulers’ profound love for art and architecture—an enduring symbol of Rajasthan’s royal heritage.

जोधपुर के ऐतिहासिक मंडोर गार्डन में स्थित महाराजा अजीत सिंह की छतरी केवल एक स्मारक नहीं, बल्कि मारवाड़ के गौरव और संघर्ष की पत्थरों में अंकित कथा है। लाल बलुआ पत्थर से निर्मित यह भव्य देवल महाराजा अजीत सिंह के पुत्र महाराजा बख़्त सिंह द्वारा लगभग 1793 ईस्वी में बनवाया गया था।
यह संरचना पारंपरिक छोटी छतरियों से भिन्न, एक ऊँचे हिन्दू मंदिर के शिखर रूप में निर्मित है और मंडोर की सबसे विशाल एवं भव्य स्मारक संरचना मानी जाती है। इसके स्तंभों, दीवारों और छतों पर की गई सूक्ष्म नक्काशी में देव-देवियाँ, नृत्य करती अप्सराएँ तथा हिन्दू, जैन और बौद्ध कला के प्रभाव स्पष्ट रूप से दिखाई देते हैं। भीतर की छत पर उकेरी गई अप्सराएँ उस युग की कलात्मक चेतना और सौंदर्यबोध का अनुपम उदाहरण हैं।
महाराजा अजीत सिंह (1679–1724 ई.) मारवाड़ के ऐसे शासक थे जिन्होंने औरंगज़ेब के शासनकाल में मुग़ल सत्ता का दृढ़ता से सामना किया। यह देवल उनकी शक्ति, विरासत और कला-प्रेम का प्रतीक है, जो आज भी राजस्थान की राजसी पहचान को जीवित रखता है।
