Hidden quietly within the Roman Catholic Cemetery of Agra stands one of the oldest surviving Christian structures in North India — the Martyrs’ Chapel, also known as Padre Santus’ Chapel. Built in the early 17th century during the Mughal period, this octagonal domed structure was originally the tomb of Khwaja Mortenepus, an Armenian merchant who died in 1611. Over time, this mausoleum became a sacred resting place for Jesuit missionaries who lived, preached, suffered imprisonment, and died in Mughal India.
