Inside the towering walls of Mehrangarh Fort lies Moti Mahal — a space where power, spectacle, and royal authority once quietly unfolded.
Built within the fort complex founded by Rao Jodha in 1459, Moti Mahal functioned as the Diwan-e-Aam, the hall where Rathore rulers addressed ministers, nobles, and the people. Its name, meaning Pearl Palace, comes from its luminous walls — finished with a refined mixture of lime plaster, shell powder, and egg white, designed to shimmer softly under lamplight.
The hall’s architecture reflects controlled grandeur rather than excess. Five small jharokha-like niches allowed royal women to observe proceedings without being seen, while coloured glass windows filtered the desert sun into muted hues. From this very chamber, decisions were announced, justice was dispensed, and royal authority was made visible.
Today, Moti Mahal stands not as a silent room, but as a reminder of how architecture once shaped governance, ceremony, and power in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

मेहरानगढ़ किले की प्राचीरों के भीतर स्थित मोती महल केवल एक कक्ष नहीं था, बल्कि वह स्थान था जहाँ राजसत्ता सार्वजनिक रूप से आकार लेती थी।
1459 में स्थापित मेहरानगढ़ किले के परिसर में बना यह भवन राठौड़ शासकों का दीवान-ए-आम था। यहीं से राजा अपने मंत्रियों और प्रजा को संबोधित करते थे। मोती महल नाम इसकी दीवारों की चमक से जुड़ा है — जिन पर चूने, शंख-चूर्ण और अंडे की सफेदी के मिश्रण से ऐसी सतह बनाई गई थी जो दीपक की रोशनी में मोती-सी दमकती थी।
इस कक्ष की पाँच छोटी झरोखा-नुमा गैलरियाँ शाही महिलाओं को परदे में रहकर सभा देखने की सुविधा देती थीं। रंगीन काँच की खिड़कियों से छनकर आती रोशनी इस सभा-स्थल को गरिमा और रहस्य दोनों प्रदान करती थी। यहीं से निर्णय घोषित होते थे और राजकीय व्यवस्था जनजीवन से संवाद करती थी।
आज मोती महल जोधपुर के इतिहास में उस दौर की याद दिलाता है जब स्थापत्य, सत्ता और परंपरा एक-दूसरे से गहराई से जुड़े हुए थे।
