In the quiet landscape of Rajasthan’s Jhalawar district stands a Jain pilgrimage site where devotion quite literally descends beneath the earth.
Chandkheri Jain Temple near Khanpur is revered as an Atishaya Kshetra dedicated to Lord Adinath (Rishabhanatha), the first Tirthankara of Jainism. According to Jain tradition, Lord Adinath was born in Ayodhya to King Nabhi Raja of the Ikshvaku (Solar) dynasty.
What makes this shrine remarkable is the extraordinary setting of the idol enshrined within it.
Inside a sanctum nearly twelve feet below ground sits a striking 6.25-foot red stone idol of Lord Adinath in the serene padmasana posture. The idol bears an inscription dated Vikram Samvat 512, indicating that the image itself is believed to be more than fifteen centuries old.
Historical accounts state that this idol was discovered in the forests of the Shergarh–Barapati region and later brought to Chandkheri. The present temple complex was constructed between Vikram Samvat 1730 and 1746 by Kishandas Mariya, who served as a secretary of the Kota State. The temple’s completion ceremony was conducted under the guidance of Bhattaraka Jagatkeerti Ji.
Over time the shrine came to be known as an Atishaya Kshetra, a place associated with deep spiritual devotion among Jain pilgrims.
Local tradition also speaks of a fascinating mystery. It is believed that behind the principal idol lies a rare image of Bhagwan Chandraprabhu crafted from precious gems and jewels, now sealed behind a wall within the sanctum.
The temple complex also features a Manastambh and a Samavasaran temple, reflecting the Jain ideals of humility and universal enlightenment.
Today Chandkheri remains one of Rajasthan’s important Digambar Jain pilgrimage centres — a sacred place where centuries-old faith continues quietly beneath the earth.

राजस्थान के झालावाड़ जिले में स्थित चांदखेड़ी जैन मंदिर दिगम्बर जैन परंपरा का एक प्रसिद्ध अतिशय क्षेत्र माना जाता है।
जैन परंपरा के अनुसार प्रथम तीर्थंकर भगवान आदिनाथ (ऋषभदेव) का जन्म अयोध्या में इक्ष्वाकु वंश के राजा नाभिराज के यहाँ हुआ था।
इस तीर्थ की सबसे विशेष बात यह है कि यहाँ भगवान आदिनाथ की प्रतिमा धरती से लगभग 12 फीट नीचे बने गर्भगृह में स्थापित है।
लाल पत्थर से निर्मित लगभग 6.25 फीट ऊँची पद्मासन मुद्रा वाली यह प्रतिमा अत्यंत प्रभावशाली है। इस प्रतिमा पर अंकित विक्रम संवत 512 का लेख संकेत देता है कि यह प्रतिमा अत्यंत प्राचीन मानी जाती है।
ऐतिहासिक उल्लेखों के अनुसार यह प्रतिमा शेरगढ़–बरापाटी क्षेत्र के जंगलों में प्राप्त हुई थी और बाद में चांदखेड़ी लाकर प्रतिष्ठित की गई। वर्तमान मंदिर का निर्माण कोटा राज्य के सचिव किशनदास मरिया द्वारा विक्रम संवत 1730 से 1746 के बीच कराया गया था और मंदिर की पूर्णता का उत्सव भट्टारक जगतकीर्ति जी के मार्गदर्शन में सम्पन्न हुआ।
मंदिर परिसर में मानस्तंभ और समवसरण मंदिर भी स्थित हैं, जो जैन दर्शन के आदर्शों को दर्शाते हैं।
आज चांदखेड़ी जैन मंदिर राजस्थान के महत्वपूर्ण दिगम्बर जैन तीर्थों में से एक है।
