On the serene banks of the River Ganga, away from the crowded ghats of Kashi, lies a quiet village known as Chandrawati, historically called Chandrapuri. While Varanasi is known worldwide for its temples, aartis, and ancient learning, this lesser-known sacred landscape carries a luminous Jain legacy.
According to Jain tradition, Chandrapuri is revered as the birthplace of Bhagwan Chandraprabhu, the eighth Tirthankara of the present avasarpini era. Born in the Ikshvaku lineage to King Mahasena and Queen Lakshmana Devi on the twelfth day of the month of Pausha, his birth was preceded by the sixteen auspicious dreams seen by his mother — a traditional sign of the arrival of a Tirthankara.
His name reflects his radiance. King Mahasena named him Chandraprabha because of his moon-like complexion. Jain texts such as the Uttarapurana describe that Indra too proclaimed him Chandraprabha, as at the moment of his birth the earth glowed and night-lotuses blossomed.
Soon after ascending the throne, he renounced worldly life. Under a Naga tree, in deep meditation, he attained Kevala gyan within three months. After years of preaching the path of non-violence, restraint, and liberation, he attained nirvana at Sammed Shikharji on the seventh day of the bright half of Phalguna.
In iconography, Chandraprabhu is depicted in kayotsarga or lotus posture, marked with a crescent moon symbol beneath him. Like all Tirthankaras, he bears the Shrivatsa symbol and calm, downcast eyes.
Today, Chandrawati houses both a Digambar Jain temple and a nearby Shwetambar temple overlooking the Ganga. The flowing river, temple silhouettes, and quiet air create not a spectacle — but a spiritual pause. Here, history does not speak loudly. It glows softly, like moonlight upon sacred waters.

गंगा के शांत तट पर, काशी की प्राचीन आध्यात्मिक भूमि में स्थित है चंद्रावती, जिसे इतिहास में चंद्रपुरी कहा गया है। जहां वाराणसी अपने घाटों और आरती के लिए प्रसिद्ध है, वहीं यह स्थान जैन परंपरा की एक शांत किंतु तेजस्वी विरासत को संजोए हुए है।
जैन परंपरा के अनुसार यही वह पावन स्थल है जहां वर्तमान अवसर्पिणी काल के आठवें तीर्थंकर भगवान चंद्रप्रभु का जन्म हुआ। उनका जन्म इक्ष्वाकु वंश में राजा महासेन और रानी लक्ष्मणा देवी के यहां पौष मास की द्वादशी को हुआ। उनके जन्म से पूर्व रानी ने सोलह शुभ स्वप्न देखे थे, जिन्हें तीर्थंकर आगमन का संकेत माना जाता है।
उनका नाम चंद्रप्रभ इसलिए पड़ा क्योंकि उनका वर्ण चंद्रमा के समान उज्ज्वल था। उत्तरपुराण में वर्णन मिलता है कि इंद्र ने भी उनका नाम चंद्रप्रभ रखा, क्योंकि उनके जन्म के समय पृथ्वी आलोकित हो उठी और रात्रि कमल खिल गए।
राज्याभिषेक के शीघ्र बाद उन्होंने संसार त्याग दिया। नाग वृक्ष के नीचे ध्यान करते हुए तीन माह में ही उन्हें केवलज्ञान प्राप्त हुआ। अनेक वर्षों तक धर्म का प्रचार करने के पश्चात उन्होंने फाल्गुन शुक्ल सप्तमी को सम्मेद शिखरजी में निर्वाण प्राप्त किया।
प्रतिमा में वे कायोत्सर्ग या पद्मासन मुद्रा में दर्शाए जाते हैं, जिनके नीचे अर्धचंद्र का चिह्न अंकित होता है। उनके वक्ष पर श्रीवत्स चिह्न और शांत दृष्टि उनकी पहचान है।
आज चंद्रावती में दिगंबर और श्वेतांबर दोनों परंपराओं के मंदिर गंगा तट पर स्थित हैं। यहां का वातावरण दर्शाता है कि इतिहास कभी शोर नहीं करता — वह चंद्रप्रभा की भांति शांत प्रकाश देता है।
