In the quiet corners of Orchha Fort stands a mansion wrapped in silence — Dauji Ki Kothi, also remembered as Dauji Ka Mahal. This grand residence once belonged to Dau Thakur, the Prime Minister of the Bundela kings, and was raised in the 16th–17th century when Orchha’s power and prestige were at their height.
Founded in 1531 by Rudra Pratap Singh Bundela, Orchha flourished as a major state until the 18th century. But when the capital shifted to Tikamgarh, many royal structures — including Dauji’s Kothi — fell into neglect. Even in its decay, the Kothi reflects the elegance of Bundela Rajput architecture, with arches and details that still speak of a glorious past.
Near the Kothi lies a well — unusual, for it is not round but built in a distinct shape — adding to the architectural curiosity of the site. Together, they embody not just the wealth of the Bundela court but also the personal world of its ministers, who stood close to the seat of power.
Today, Dauji Ki Kothi remains an evocative reminder of Orchha’s layered history — the grandeur of kings, the lives of ministers, and the silent testimony of stone.

ओरछा के किले परिसर में खामोशी के बीच खड़ी है एक हवेली — दाऊजी की कोठी, जिसे दाऊजी का महल भी कहा जाता है। यह भव्य निवास बुंदेला राजाओं के प्रधानमंत्री दाऊ ठाकुर का था और 16वीं–17वीं शताब्दी में इसका निर्माण हुआ, जब ओरछा अपनी शक्ति और वैभव के चरम पर था।
1531 में रुद्र प्रताप सिंह बुंदेला द्वारा स्थापित ओरछा, 17वीं और 18वीं शताब्दी तक एक महत्वपूर्ण राज्य बना रहा। किंतु जब राजधानी टीकमगढ़ स्थानांतरित हुई, तो दाऊजी की कोठी समेत अनेक शाही इमारतें उपेक्षा का शिकार हो गईं।
इस कोठी के पास बना एक अनोखा कुआँ, जो सामान्य कुओं की तरह गोल नहीं बल्कि अलग आकार का है, इसकी विशेषता को और बढ़ा देता है। आज यह महल खंडहर होते हुए भी बुंदेला राजपूतों की स्थापत्य कला और शाही जीवन की कहानी सुनाता है।
ओरछा के इतिहास में दाऊजी की कोठी सिर्फ एक इमारत नहीं, बल्कि वह अध्याय है जो राजाओं और उनके मंत्रियों के जीवन और शासन की झलक आज भी हमें दिखाता है।
