But for the Jain community, this sacred night holds a deeper, spiritual meaning. On the dark new moon night of Kartik, in 527 BCE, Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, attained Nirvana (liberation) at Pavapuri (Bihar). After his final sermon, as Mahavira left his mortal body, the Ganadharas (chief disciples) and thousands of followers illuminated the night with rows of diyas, symbolizing the light of knowledge dispelling the darkness of ignorance. This is why Jains light lamps — not for wealth or victory — but to honour the eternal flame of Mahavira’s teachings. The day after Diwali also holds special significance: it marks the moment when Gautama Swami, Mahavira’s foremost disciple, attained Keval Gyan (omniscience).
