Tucked away in the Roman Catholic Cemetery of Agra stands a striking yellow-domed mausoleum on a red sandstone plinth – the Ellis Family Tomb. At the heart of this eight-sided structure lies the grave of Francis Ellis, an Englishman who died in 1868.
Surrounding his tomb are gravestones of at least seven more family members, including infants and young children. These epitaphs hint at the sorrowful history of a British merchant family that once lived in Agra during the colonial era.
From the inscriptions and names, it appears that the Ellis family were English merchants settled in Agra. Although no detailed historical records are available about them today, the elaborate architecture of the tomb clearly shows they were extremely wealthy. Their resting place, with ornate pointed arches, fine carvings, and an imposing dome, silently preserves the grandeur of a forgotten past.

आगरा के रोमन कैथोलिक कब्रिस्तान में एक भव्य पीले गुंबद वाली समाधि खड़ी है, जो लाल बलुआ पत्थर के चबूतरे पर बनी है – इसे एलीस परिवार की समाधि कहा जाता है। इस अष्टकोणीय संरचना के भीतर फ्रांसिस एलीस की कब्र है, जिनका निधन 1868 में हुआ था।
इस समाधि के चारों ओर कम से कम सात अन्य परिवारजनों की कब्रें हैं, जिनमें नवजात और छोटे बच्चे भी शामिल हैं। ये सब उस ब्रिटिश व्यापारी परिवार की कहानी कहती हैं जिसने कभी आगरा में जीवन बिताया था।
