Hidden in the grand courtyards of Agra Fort lies an unusual and jarring reminder of British colonial arrogance — the grave of John Russell Colvin, right opposite the Diwan-i-Aam, where Mughal emperors once addressed their people.
Colvin, the last Lieutenant-Governor of the North-Western Provinces under the East India Company, died of cholera during the 1857 Revolt while hiding inside the fort. With no better option, the British chose to bury him right in the Mughal-era quadrangle — disregarding the sanctity and architectural legacy of the fort.
Lord Curzon later tried to relocate the grave to preserve Mughal aesthetics, but Colvin’s family refused, calling it sacred. Today, the small grave stands in a barricaded enclosure — a symbol of how colonial power often bulldozed over history, culture, and heritage.

1899 में वायसराय लॉर्ड कर्ज़न ने इस कब्र को हटाकर किले की मुग़ल पहचान को बहाल करने की कोशिश की, लेकिन कॉल्विन के पुत्रों ने इसे “पवित्र स्थल” बताते हुए मना कर दिया। आज यह कब्र बैरिकेड में घिरी हुई है — एक प्रतीक उस उपनिवेशी सोच का, जिसने भारतीय धरोहर की अनदेखी की।
