At dawn, the Ganga at Garhmukteshwar shimmers beneath countless lamps and whispered prayers. This ancient town in Hapur district, Uttar Pradesh takes its name from legend—when Lord Shiva’s attendants Jai and Vijai attained mukti here. Once called Ganamukteshwar (“the place where Shiva’s attendants found liberation”), it gradually became Garhmukteshwar — the fortress of liberation.
Every year, on the full moon of Kartik Purnima, the grand Garh Ganga Mela turns the ghats into a living ocean of faith. It is believed that on this day, the gods visit the earth to take a holy dip in the Ganges — hence it is also known as the ‘Diwali of the Gods.’ Lakhs of devotees gather at Brij Ghat and Mukteshwar Ghat to perform Pind Daan, Deep Daan and Asthi Visarjan, believing that a dip here cleanses sins and grants peace to departed souls.
All around the ghats, a temporary tent-city of camps springs up—families and groups staying together in a joyful, festive mood throughout the mela days. Community kitchens, tea stalls, bhajans and folk songs fill the air, creating a riverside neighborhood woven with faith and celebration.
The fair is one of North India’s largest — second only to the Kumbh Mela — and is popularly called the ‘Chhota Kumbh.’ Beyond devotion, the festival brims with life and legacy. The famed Gadhe-ka-Mela (donkey and horse fair) continues centuries of tradition as traders converge from every corner of India. At twilight, when thousands of lamps drift along the river, the Ganga seems to carry away every burden — leaving only light, reflection, and renewal.
It is also said that after the Mahabharata war, Arjuna, Yudhishthira and Lord Krishna performed a yajna here for atonement. Thus, from Ganamukteshwar to Garhmukteshwar, the spirit of liberation and divine grace still flows like the river itself.

गंगा के पावन तट पर स्थित गढ़मुक्तेश्वर हर वर्ष आस्था और भक्ति का महान उत्सव देखता है। किंवदंती है कि भगवान शिव के दो गण — जय और विजय — ने यहीं मोक्ष प्राप्त किया। इसलिए इसे पहले गणमुक्तेश्वर कहा गया, जो बाद में गढ़मुक्तेश्वर, अर्थात् “मुक्ति का गढ़” कहलाया।
कार्तिक पूर्णिमा के दिन यहाँ लगने वाला गढ़ गंगा मेला श्रद्धा का अनूठा दृश्य प्रस्तुत करता है। कहा जाता है कि इस दिन देवता स्वयं पृथ्वी पर उतरकर गंगा में पवित्र स्नान करते हैं, इसी लिए इसे “देवों की दीवाली” भी कहा जाता है। लाखों श्रद्धालु गंगा-स्नान करते हुए पिंडदान, दीपदान और अस्थि-विसर्जन करते हैं और पूर्वजों की शांति की कामना करते हैं।
घाटों के आसपास अस्थायी कैंपों का पूरा नगर बस जाता है — जहाँ परिवार और समूह खुशहाल और उत्सव भरे माहौल में ठहरते हैं। रसोई, भजन, लोक-गीत और साझे प्रसाद के साथ यह पूरा क्षेत्र भक्ति और आनंद का जीवंत पड़ोस बन जाता है।
गढ़ गंगा मेला उत्तर भारत के सबसे बड़े मेलों में से एक है — जो कुंभ के बाद दूसरे स्थान पर आता है, और “छोटा कुंभ” के नाम से प्रसिद्ध है। यहाँ लगने वाला गधों-घोड़ों का मेला भी बहुत लोकप्रिय है, जहाँ देश भर से व्यापारी आते हैं। संध्या के समय जब हजारों दीपक गंगा में बहते हैं, तो पूरा आकाश और धरती सोने सी रोशनी में नहा उठते हैं।
कहा जाता है कि महाभारत के बाद अर्जुन, युधिष्ठिर और श्रीकृष्ण ने यहीं यज्ञ किया था ताकि युद्ध के पापों से मुक्ति मिल सके। गणमुक्तेश्वर से गढ़मुक्तेश्वर तक यह भूमि आज भी मोक्ष और प्रायश्चित्त की अखंड कथा सुनाती है।
