At Surajkund in Meerut (Uttar Pradesh) stands the historic Gurudwara Baba Shri Chandra Ji, built in 1907. It is one of the city’s oldest Sikh shrines, dedicated to Baba Sri Chand Ji, the revered son of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and founder of the Udasi sect.
What makes this site remarkable is the survival of rare colonial-era inscriptions that document its early history:
• “MUSALMANS ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED TO ENTER OR BATHE ON THESE GHATS BY ORDER OF COLLECTOR 1907.”
• “THESE ALL ROUND WALLS OF BOTH THE GATES ARE BUILT BY DHONAGER GURDWARA BABA SANT DAS UDASI 1915.”
• A further plaque from 1937, signed by Commissioner P.W. Marsh and District Magistrate T.J.C. Acton, confirmed that the Sadhu Udasein Dera at Surajkund belonged to Udasi Mahants, and officially instructed that Sikhs should not interfere.
Together, these inscriptions provide a rare window into the Gurudwara’s Udasi lineage, its expansion under Baba Sant Das Udasi, and the role of colonial officials in regulating this sacred site. Alongside the ancient Surajkund pond (built in 1714), the Gurudwara continues to stand as a testament of faith and history in Meerut.

गुरुद्वारा बाबा श्री चंद्र जी, सूरजकुंड – मीरठ, उत्तर प्रदेश
मीरठ (उत्तर प्रदेश) के सूरजकुंड क्षेत्र में स्थित गुरुद्वारा बाबा श्री चंद्र जी का निर्माण 1907 में हुआ था। यह मीरठ के सबसे प्राचीन और प्रतिष्ठित गुरुद्वारों में से एक है, जो गुरु नानक देव जी के ज्येष्ठ पुत्र और उदासी संप्रदाय के संस्थापक बाबा श्री चंद जी से जुड़ा हुआ है।
यहाँ लगे शिलालेख आज भी इसकी ऐतिहासिकता को प्रमाणित करते हैं:
• “कलेक्टर के आदेशानुसार (1907), इन घाटों पर मुसलमानों का प्रवेश करना या स्नान करना सख्ती से मना है।”
• “यह चारदीवारी और दोनों दरवाज़े बाबा संत दास उदासी द्वारा सन 1915 में बनवाए गए।”
• 1937 का शिलालेख, जिस पर कमिश्नर पी.डब्ल्यू. मार्श और ज़िला मजिस्ट्रेट टी.जे.सी. एक्टन के हस्ताक्षर दर्ज हैं, यह आदेश देता है कि सूरजकुंड का उदासी डेरा केवल महंतों के अधीन है और सिखों को इसमें हस्तक्षेप करने की मनाही है।
ये अभिलेख न केवल गुरुद्वारे की धार्मिक–सांस्कृतिक पृष्ठभूमि को स्पष्ट करते हैं, बल्कि उस दौर की प्रशासनिक दख़लअंदाज़ी की झलक भी प्रस्तुत करते हैं। आज यह स्थान श्रद्धा और शांति का प्रतीक है।
