History of Kans Quila, Mathura.
Kans Quila, situated on the banks of the Yamuna in Mathura, is believed to be the mythical fortress of Kansa, Lord Krishna’s maternal uncle. While folklore traces its origins to ancient times, the earliest documented mention comes from 18th‑century scholar Narahara Chakravarti, who described ruins attributed to Kansa’s castle .
In the 16th century, Raja Man Singh of Jaipur reconstructed the fort, using red sandstone pillars to form an audience hall . Later, Sawai Jai Singh planned an observatory here, but no trace remains today . The fort was used by Jats and Marathas before falling into neglect under the British, who partially demolished it, even granting materials to contractor Jyoti Prasad before 1857—a loss lamented by historians .
Despite its ruinous state, Kans Quila remains an iconic heritage site. From Vishram Ghat, one can still imagine the grandeur of its past against the backdrop of the Yamuna.
मथुरा में कंस क़िला का इतिहास
यमुना के तट पर स्थित कंस क़िला, जिसे भगवान श्रीकृष्ण के चाचा कंस की क़िले के रूप में माना जाता है, मथुरा के सांस्कृतिक इतिहास में महत्वपूर्ण स्थान रखता है। हालांकि पौराणिक काल से जुड़ी कहानियाँ हैं, लेकिन इसका पहला भरोसेमंद जिक्र 18वीं सदी के विद्वान नरहर चक्रवर्ती ने किया था, जिन्होंने इसे कंस की ऐतिहासिक निशानियों में शामिल किया ।
16वीं सदी में जयपुर के राजा मान सिंह ने इस किले का पुनर्निर्माण कराया और यहां लाल बलुआ पत्थर के स्तंभों वाला सभागृह बनाया गया । बाद में राजा सवाई जय सिंह ने यहां वेधशाला बनाने की योजना बनाई, लेकिन उसके कोई अवशेष आज नहीं मिलते । ब्रिटिश शासन के दौरान किले की बड़ी भंग दी गई और ठेकेदार ज्योति प्रसाद को इसका मटेरियल भी दिया गया—यह इतिहास का एक दर्दनाक अध्याय है ।
आज कड़कों में जर्जर होते हुए भी कंस क़िला मथुरा की ऐतिहासिक विरासत का प्रतीक बना हुआ है। विष्राम घाट से इसकी यमुना के पार अद्भुत छटा आज भी देखने वालों के मन में इसकी भव्यता की कल्पना जगाती है
