Between Munj Sagar and Kapur Talab in Mandu, Dhar district, stands Jahaz Mahal, a palace designed to appear like a ship anchored on still waters. Built in the late 15th century during the reign of Sultan Ghiyas-ud-Din Khilji, it served as a pleasure palace for the women of his royal harem.
Placed on a narrow ridge between two lakes, the palace created an illusion during monsoon—when both reservoirs filled, its reflection appeared like a massive ship floating on water. This striking visual earned it the name “Jahaz Mahal.” The structure, almost 120 meters long and about 15 meters wide, blends Afghan, Mughal and Hindu styles.
The lower floor houses three large halls connected by corridors, with a rear pavilion that once looked out over Munj Sagar. A unique staircase leads to the upper level, where long terraces and corner pavilions overlook Mandu’s serene landscape. Lotus-shaped pools on both floors, once filled via the rehat (Persian wheel) system, showcase Mandu’s sophisticated water engineering. Historical records also note that Jahaz Mahal was among the few buildings in Mandu with fully plastered walls and iron-clamped stones, reflecting its special royal function.
Today, its terrace still carries the quiet echo of lantern-lit evenings, music, and the elegance that once defined Mandu’s royal world.

जहाज़ महल, मांडू – पानी पर तैरता हुआ जहाज़ी महल
मध्यप्रदेश के धार ज़िले में स्थित मांडू का जहाज़ महल इतिहास, भ्रम और वास्तुकला का ऐसा अद्भुत संगम है जिसे देखकर लगता है मानो कोई विशाल जहाज़ शांत पानी पर स्थिर खड़ा हो। मुंज सागर और कपूर तालाब के बीच की पतली ज़मीन पर बना यह महल 15वीं शताब्दी के उत्तरार्ध में सुल्तान गयास-उद-दीन खिलजी के शासनकाल में निर्मित हुआ था। इतिहास में इसका उल्लेख एक राजसी आनंद-प्रासाद के रूप में मिलता है, जिसे उनके विशाल हरम की महिलाओं के लिये बनाया गया था।
बरसात के मौसम में, जब दोनों तालाब लबालब भर जाते थे, तो महल का प्रतिबिंब पानी में ऐसा दृश्य बनाता था जो इसे सचमुच एक तैरते हुए जहाज़ में बदल देता था। इसी कारण इसे ‘जहाज़ महल’ नाम मिला। लगभग 120 मीटर लंबा और 15 मीटर चौड़ा यह महल अफगान, मुगल और हिन्दू शैलियों का सुंदर मेल प्रस्तुत करता है। इसकी निचली मंज़िल में तीन बड़े कक्ष हैं जिन्हें गलियारों से जोड़ा गया है। पीछे की ओर बना मंडप किसी समय मुंज सागर की ओर खुला रहता था।
ऊपरी मंज़िल की ओर जाने वाली सीढ़ियाँ जहाज़ पर चढ़ने जैसा अनुभव देती हैं। वहाँ बने लंबे छत-मार्ग, कोने के मंडप और हवा से भरपूर कक्ष मांडू के शांत वातावरण को और भी जीवंत बना देते हैं। दोनों मंज़िलों पर मौजूद कमलाकार कुंड, जिन्हें कभी रहट द्वारा भरा जाता था, प्राचीन जल-प्रबंधन की दक्षता को दर्शाते हैं।
इतिहास में यह भी उल्लेखित है कि मांडू की अन्य इमारतों के विपरीत, जहाज़ महल की दीवारों पर उचित प्लास्टर किया गया था और पत्थरों को लोहे की क्लैम्प से बाँधा गया था—एक संकेत कि यह महल विशेष महत्त्व रखता था। आज भी इसकी लंबी छत पर खड़ा होकर जब कोई चारों ओर नज़र दौड़ाता है, तो ऐसा लगता है मानो समय ठहर गया हो और बीते युग की हल्की गूँज अब भी हवाओं में घुली हो।
