Hidden among towering deodar forests, away from the crowded slopes of Shimla, lies Naldehra Golf Course — one of India’s oldest surviving golf courses and a rare colonial landscape shaped more by nature than design.
In the early years of the 20th century, Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of British India from 1899 to 1905, frequently camped at this quiet meadow during his Himalayan retreats. The cool climate, rolling terrain, and pine-covered hills reminded him of the Scottish Highlands. Captivated by the setting, Curzon envisioned a golf course that would follow the land rather than alter it.
Established around 1905, Naldehra was originally laid out as a 9-hole course, carefully aligned with the natural slopes and contours. Even today, it retains this original character, playing as 18 holes by repeating tees — a rare continuity in Indian sporting heritage.
So deep was Lord Curzon’s attachment to this place that his daughter, born in 1903, was given the middle name Alexandra Naldera, a detail widely believed to reflect his affection for Naldehra and its landscape.
The name “Naldehra” itself is rooted in local belief. According to regional tradition, the meadow was associated with the serpent deity Nal Deo, and folklore speaks of a divine battle that left the land unusually free of stones, allowing grass to flourish naturally. While this remains a matter of belief, it continues to shape the cultural memory of the place.
Today, maintained by Himachal Tourism, Naldehra Golf Course is known for its narrow fairways, steep gradients, and forested surroundings, making it both scenic and technically demanding. Beginners can take basic training, visitors can experience the course on a day basis, and tournaments like the Naldehra Open keep its sporting legacy alive.
More than a golf course, Naldehra stands as a quiet meeting point of colonial history, Himalayan nature, and living tradition.

शिमला की भीड़-भाड़ से दूर, देवदार के ऊँचे वृक्षों से घिरा नालदेहरा गोल्फ कोर्स भारत की सबसे पुरानी और जीवित औपनिवेशिक विरासतों में से एक है — एक ऐसा स्थल जहाँ खेल, प्रकृति और इतिहास सहज रूप से एक-दूसरे में घुलते हैं।
बीसवीं शताब्दी के प्रारंभिक वर्षों में, 1899 से 1905 तक ब्रिटिश भारत के वायसराय रहे लॉर्ड कर्ज़न अपनी हिमालयी यात्राओं के दौरान इस शांत मैदान में प्रवास किया करते थे। ठंडी हवा, ढलानों पर फैली हरियाली और देवदारों से ढके पहाड़ उन्हें स्कॉटलैंड के हाईलैंड्स की याद दिलाते थे। इसी आकर्षण से प्रेरित होकर उन्होंने यहाँ एक ऐसे गोल्फ कोर्स की कल्पना की, जो ज़मीन को बदले बिना उसी के साथ बहता चले।
लगभग 1905 में स्थापित यह गोल्फ कोर्स मूल रूप से 9 होल का था। इसकी संरचना पूरी तरह प्राकृतिक उतार-चढ़ाव के अनुरूप रखी गई। आज भी यह कोर्स उसी स्वरूप में 18 होल की तरह खेला जाता है — जो इसकी ऐतिहासिक निरंतरता का प्रमाण है।
कहा जाता है कि इस स्थान से लॉर्ड कर्ज़न का लगाव इतना गहरा था कि 1903 में जन्मी उनकी पुत्री को एलेक्ज़ेंड्रा नालदेहरा नाम दिया गया, जिसे नालदेहरा से उनके भावनात्मक जुड़ाव का प्रतीक माना जाता है।
“नालदेहरा” नाम के पीछे स्थानीय लोकविश्वास भी जुड़ा है। मान्यता है कि यह भूमि नाग देवता नल देव से संबंधित थी। लोककथाओं के अनुसार, एक दैवी युद्ध के बाद यह मैदान पत्थरों से मुक्त हो गया, जिससे घास स्वाभाविक रूप से पनप सकी। यह विश्वास ऐतिहासिक प्रमाण नहीं, बल्कि पीढ़ियों से चली आ रही सांस्कृतिक स्मृति है।
आज यह गोल्फ कोर्स हिमाचल पर्यटन विभाग द्वारा संरक्षित है। इसकी संकरी फेयरवे, तीखे ढलान और चारों ओर फैले जंगल इसे तकनीकी रूप से चुनौतीपूर्ण बनाते हैं। शुरुआती खिलाड़ियों के लिए प्रशिक्षण उपलब्ध है, पर्यटक सीमित शुल्क पर इसे अनुभव कर सकते हैं, और नालदेहरा ओपन जैसे टूर्नामेंट इसकी खेल परंपरा को जीवित रखते हैं।
नालदेहरा केवल एक गोल्फ कोर्स नहीं, बल्कि इतिहास, प्रकृति और परंपरा के शांत सह-अस्तित्व की कहानी है।
