The octagonal stepwell (baoli) at Fatehpur Sikri is a stunning example of Mughal-era hydraulic architecture.
Built in red sandstone, it features thirteen vertical steps on the north and west sides leading to a flat roof, atop which an octagonal platform indicates the rooms that once contained large windlasses used to lift water.
The stairways were ingeniously designed to avoid interfering with the mechanical operation. This well was meant to supply water mechanically to the royal harem and surrounding palaces. The corridors are adorned with rosettes and simple carvings, adding to its majestic appearance.

फतेहपुर सीकरी की अष्टकोणीय बावड़ी मुग़ल वास्तुकला की एक अनोखी मिसाल है।
लाल बलुआ पत्थर से बनी इस बावड़ी में उत्तर और पश्चिम दिशा से तेरह खड़ी सीढ़ियाँ एक सपाट छत तक जाती हैं, जहाँ एक अष्टकोणीय मंच स्थित है। यह मंच उन कमरों की छत को चिह्नित करता है जहाँ विशाल पवनचक्कियाँ पानी ऊपर उठाने के लिए घूमती थीं।
सीढ़ियाँ इस तरह से डिज़ाइन की गई हैं कि वे पवनचक्कियों के संचालन में कोई बाधा नहीं पहुँचातीं। इस बावड़ी का निर्माण मुख्य रूप से हरम सरा और महल के अन्य हिस्सों को यांत्रिक तरीकों से पानी की आपूर्ति करने के लिए किया गया था। इसके गलियारों को रोसेट और सरल नक्काशी से सजाया गया है, जो इसकी भव्यता को और बढ़ाते हैं।
