Long before Madhuban became the starting point of the sacred yatra to Sammed Shikharji, there existed another gateway—quiet, ancient, and deeply spiritual. That gateway was Palganj.
Located just a few kilometers from the Kevalgyan Kalyanak Bhumi of Lord Mahavir at Rujuvalika, Palganj once served as the original taleti—the base from where pilgrims began their ascent to the hill of liberation, where 20 Tirthankars attained Nirvana. Over time, with shifting landscapes and changing routes, this sacred beginning faded into silence.
Historically known as Patalgarh, Palganj was a semi-autonomous chiefdom under the Kharagdiha region, ruled by Baghel Kshatriya rulers. In the Mughal era, the Jagat Seths of Murshidabad acquired rights over Shikharji through imperial firmans and later entrusted its care to the Raja of Palganj. This connection was formally acknowledged even during British rule, when the Raja was granted zamindari rights over the hill.
But beyond politics and power, the true soul of Palganj lies within an ancient temple—home to a remarkable idol of Lord Parshwanath. Historians date this idol to around the 4th century CE, though local belief holds it to be far older. Carved from a single stone, seated in deep meditation, adorned with the iconic seven serpent hoods and detailed celestial carvings, the idol reflects a time when Jainism existed beyond sectarian divisions.
For centuries, pilgrims from both Digambar and Shwetambar traditions offered reverence here before beginning their sacred journey. Even today, despite attempts to relocate the idol closer to Madhuban, it remains rooted in Palganj—almost as if guarding its forgotten legacy.
The present temple structure, renovated in 1970, may appear simple, but the spiritual and historical depth it holds is immense. Palganj is not just a place—it is the original threshold of Shikharji, waiting quietly to be remembered.

आज जहाँ अधिकांश यात्री सम्मेद शिखरजी की यात्रा माधुबन से आरंभ करते हैं, वहीं इतिहास हमें एक और प्राचीन द्वार की ओर ले जाता है—पालगंज।
रुजुवलिका स्थित भगवान महावीर की केवलज्ञान भूमि से कुछ ही दूरी पर स्थित यह स्थान कभी शिखरजी की मूल तलहटी हुआ करता था। यहीं से श्रद्धालु अपनी यात्रा आरंभ करते थे, उस पावन पर्वत की ओर जहाँ 20 तीर्थंकरों ने निर्वाण प्राप्त किया।
प्राचीन काल में पातालगढ़ के नाम से प्रसिद्ध पालगंज, खड़गडीहा क्षेत्र की एक प्रमुख गद्दी थी, जहाँ बघेल क्षत्रिय राजाओं का शासन था। मुगल काल में मुर्शिदाबाद के जगत सेठों को शिखरजी के अधिकार प्राप्त हुए और उन्होंने इस क्षेत्र की देखरेख पालगंज के राजा को सौंपी। अंग्रेजों के समय में भी इस संबंध को मान्यता दी गई।
किन्तु पालगंज की वास्तविक पहचान उसके एक प्राचीन मंदिर में स्थापित भगवान पार्श्वनाथ की अद्भुत प्रतिमा है। इतिहासकार इसे लगभग 4वीं शताब्दी की मानते हैं, जबकि स्थानीय मान्यता इसे इससे भी अधिक प्राचीन बताती है। एक ही पत्थर से निर्मित यह प्रतिमा पद्मासन मुद्रा में विराजमान है, जिसके पीछे सप्तफणी सर्प और सुंदर देव आकृतियाँ उकेरी गई हैं।
यह स्थान सदियों तक दिगंबर और श्वेतांबर दोनों परंपराओं के श्रद्धालुओं का केंद्र रहा। यहाँ दर्शन करने के बाद ही तीर्थयात्री अपनी यात्रा आगे बढ़ाते थे। आज भी कई प्रयासों के बावजूद यह प्रतिमा अपने स्थान से नहीं हिली—मानो अपने अतीत की रक्षा कर रही हो।
1970 में मंदिर का पुनर्निर्माण हुआ, पर इसकी सादगी के भीतर जो आध्यात्मिक और ऐतिहासिक गहराई है, वह अनुपम है। पालगंज केवल एक स्थान नहीं, बल्कि शिखरजी की उस भूली हुई शुरुआत का प्रतीक है, जो आज भी अपनी पहचान की प्रतीक्षा कर रही है।
