Did you know that Rejban Bazaar was once called Regiment Bazaar? Wander through the crisscrossing lanes of Rejban Bazaar, and you don’t just see a market — you witness the echoes of a time long gone. Originally known as Regiment Bazaar, this quarter was born in the early 1800s to serve the cantonment. Over decades, the name softened in local usage, transforming into the familiar “Rejban” — but the essence remains deeply rooted in its past. Among the aging facades stands one of the area’s oldest establishments: Mussadi Lal ji ki dukaan, now Santosh Provision Store, lovingly maintained by Mr. Ajay Rastogi — whose ancestors once brought grain on camelback from Rajasthan and Haryana, trading jaggery and country sugar in return. Ajay ji recalls a structured world within the chaos: • Sadar Bazaar was for British officers alone — elite, inaccessible. • Bara Regiment Bazaar catered to Indian subedars and high-ranking soldiers. • Chhota Regiment Bazaar served the rank and file. ???? The lowest castes shopped in segregated corners — a painful reminder of social hierarchies reinforced by the Raj. Tucked within this maze stands Masjid Kasabaan, its three domes rising like sentinels of a forgotten era. Believed to be built by the same lineage as the 1836 Jama Masjid of Lalkurti, its lime-and-surkhi construction remains untouched by modernity. And in these lanes — the carved brackets, flaking blue doors, mossed stone thresholds — history doesn’t shout… it gently lingers. रेजबन बाज़ार – रेजीमेंट की ख़ामोश विरासत ???? मेरठ छावनी रेजबन बाज़ार, मेरठ – एक बाज़ार जो रेजीमेंट से बना इतिहास क्या आप जानते हैं कि रेजबन बाज़ार को पहले रेजीमेंट बाज़ार कहा जाता था? रेजबन बाज़ार की तंग गलियाँ आज भी पुरानी हवेलियों की साँसों में इतिहास को ज़िंदा रखती हैं। कभी इसे कहा जाता था रेजीमेंट बाज़ार — ब्रिटिश सेना के लिए बना एक व्यवस्थित बाज़ार। समय के साथ उच्चारण बदला, और लोग इसे “रेजबन” कहने लगे। नाम भले बदला हो, पहचान अब भी वैसी ही है — गहराई से अतीत में जड़ें जमाए हुए। इन्हीं गलियों में आज भी मौजूद है एक 200 वर्ष पुरानी दुकान — मुसद्दी लाल जी की दुकान, जिसे अब संतोष प्रोविजन स्टोर कहा जाता है। श्री अजय रस्तोगी आज भी उसी परिवार की परंपरा को संजोए हुए हैं। उनके पूर्वज ऊँटों पर अनाज लाते, और वापसी में गुड़ व खांड भेजा करते थे। अजय जी ने बताया कि उस ज़माने में बाज़ार भी वर्गों में बँटा होता था: • सदर बाज़ार – केवल अंग्रेज़ अफसरों के लिए • बड़ा रेजीमेंट बाज़ार – सुबेदारों और वरिष्ठ भारतीय सैनिकों के लिए • छोटा रेजीमेंट बाज़ार – सामान्य सैनिकों के लिए ???? और सबसे निचले वर्ग के लिए अलग कोना — जहाँ जाति का भेद खुलेआम दिखता था। इसी क्षेत्र में स्थित है मस्जिद कसाबान — तीन गुंबदों वाली ये मस्जिद उसी परिवार की बताई जाती है जिसने 1836 में लालकुर्ती की जामा मस्जिद बनाई थी। ईंट नहीं — सिर्फ गोंडा (चूना, सुरखी, दाल) से बनी ये मस्जिद आज भी वैसी की वैसी खड़ी है। और इन पुरानी दीवारों, दरवाज़ों और छज्जों में… इतिहास अब भी मौन स्वर में सांस ले रहा है।
