There are cities that live in history, and then there is Varanasi — Kashi — where faith breathes through every lane. In the sacred quarter of Bhelupur stands the Shri Parshvanath Digambar Jain Temple, a site deeply revered in Jain tradition as the birthplace of Lord Parshvanath, the 23rd Tirthankara.
According to Jain scriptures and long-standing historical tradition, Lord Parshvanath was born here in the 9th–8th century BCE to King Ashvasena and Queen Vama Devi of the Ikshvaku lineage, on Paush Krishna Ekadashi. He is among the earliest Jain Tirthankaras acknowledged in both religious and historical studies.
This sacred site in Bhelupur is associated with three principal Kalyanaks of Lord Parshvanath — Chyavan (conception), Janma (birth), and Deeksha (renunciation). Jain literary sources, including the 14th-century text Vividha Tirtha Kalpa by Acharya Jinaprabha Suri, document the importance of this tirtha. Tradition also connects the place with Acharya Samantabhadra, the 2nd-century Jain philosopher, who is believed to have performed penance here.
The present Digambar temple houses a 75 cm black stone idol of Lord Parshvanath, stylistically dated by scholars to around the 9th–11th century CE. The serpent hood above the idol reflects his identifying symbol — the serpent — which is deeply embedded in Jain iconography.
A remarkable aspect of Bhelupur is the coexistence of both Digambar and Shwetambar temples side by side, reflecting a rare example of sectarian harmony within Jainism.
It is important to note that while Lord Parshvanath attained Kevalgyan at Sammed Shikharji (Parasnath Hill) in present-day Jharkhand, his birth took place here in Varanasi, making this site one of the holiest Jain pilgrimage centres in India.

कुछ नगर इतिहास में बसते हैं, और कुछ नगर स्वयं इतिहास होते हैं। वाराणसी — काशी — उन्हीं में से एक है। इसी पवित्र नगरी के भेलूपुर क्षेत्र में स्थित है श्री पार्श्वनाथ दिगंबर जैन मंदिर, जिसे जैन परंपरा में भगवान पार्श्वनाथ की जन्मस्थली माना जाता है।
जैन ग्रंथों और ऐतिहासिक परंपराओं के अनुसार भगवान पार्श्वनाथ का जन्म 9वीं–8वीं शताब्दी ईसा पूर्व में वाराणसी के राजा अश्वसेन और रानी वामा देवी के यहाँ पौष कृष्ण एकादशी को हुआ था। वे जैन धर्म के 23वें तीर्थंकर हैं और प्राचीनतम ऐतिहासिक रूप से मान्य तीर्थंकरों में से एक माने जाते हैं।
भेलूपुर का यह स्थान उनके तीन प्रमुख कल्याणकों — च्यवन, जन्म और दीक्षा — से जुड़ा हुआ है। 14वीं शताब्दी के ग्रंथ ‘विविध तीर्थ कल्प’ (आचार्य जिनप्रभ सूरी) में इस तीर्थ की महत्ता का उल्लेख मिलता है। परंपरा यह भी बताती है कि द्वितीय शताब्दी के महान दार्शनिक आचार्य समन्तभद्र ने यहाँ तप किया था।
मंदिर के गर्भगृह में स्थापित लगभग 75 सेंटीमीटर ऊँची काले पत्थर की दिगंबर प्रतिमा शैली के आधार पर 9वीं–11वीं शताब्दी की मानी जाती है। उनके मस्तक पर विराजमान सर्पछत्र उनके प्रतीक चिह्न का द्योतक है।
यहाँ दिगंबर और श्वेतांबर दोनों परंपराओं के मंदिर साथ-साथ स्थित हैं, जो जैन धर्म में सांप्रदायिक सौहार्द का सुंदर उदाहरण प्रस्तुत करते हैं।
यह उल्लेखनीय है कि भगवान पार्श्वनाथ ने केवलज्ञान झारखंड के सम्मेद शिखर (पारसनाथ पर्वत) पर प्राप्त किया था, जबकि उनका जन्म वाराणसी में हुआ। इसी कारण यह स्थल जैन श्रद्धालुओं के लिए अत्यंत पवित्र तीर्थ है।
