According to traditional belief and references found in the Shiv Purana (Vayu Samhita), this Siddhpeeth holds a unique place in the sacred geography of the region. Local tradition associates the very founding of Meerut—believed to derive from “Maya Rashtra”—with Maya, the legendary architect of the Asuras and father of Mandodari. It is believed that Maya established his presiding deity, Shri Panchmukhi Mahadev, in the nairitya kon (south-west direction), a placement considered spiritually significant in Hindu cosmology.
For centuries, this Siddhpeeth remained on the outskirts of the ancient settlement. Time passed, the city expanded, and today the temple stands at the centre of Meerut—still holding the same spiritual gravity.
The Siddhpeeth complex traditionally comprises seven sacred maths, including the main Panchmukhi Mahadev shrine, the ancient Maa Bhagwati Katyayani, Shri Mankameshwar Mahadev, an old Hanuman temple, and the grand Shiv–Savitri temple, known for its rare and elaborate iconography. The presence of Shiva with his family, along with multiple forms of the Divine Mother, makes this complex exceptionally distinctive in North India.
Historical records and local accounts also note Maratha-era renovations, during which land grants were associated with the temple for its upkeep. Even today, the Siddhpeeth continues its age-old traditions of free food, shelter for saints and pilgrims, and the operation of a gaushala serving dozens of cows.
