The Flame That Echoes Through Time: The Jauhar of Chanderi
Once upon a cold January night in 1528, Chanderi stood under siege by the forces of Babur. Its ruler, Medini Rai, fought with all his might. But as the fortress walls were breached and defeat became inevitable, a moment of unshakable resolve emerged. At the queen’s signal, 1600 brave women, led by Queen Manimala, embraced the flames rather than face dishonour at the hands of the invaders.
While the world remembers the Jauhar of Chittor, the sacrifice of Chanderi too remains etched in history. In the Battle of Chanderi (January 1528), Babur’s cannons surrounded the fort, and Rajput women chose martyrdom over humiliation.
Today, a Jauhar Memorial stands inside Chanderi Fort, built in Vikram Samvat 1588 under the patronage of the rulers of Gwalior. The stone carving within the memorial depicts three scenes — the women’s Jauhar at the base, the battle between Babur and Medini Rai’s armies in the middle, and the king and queen offering prayers to Lord Shiva at the top. It stands as an eternal symbol of courage and dignity.

चंदेरी का अमर बलिदान: रानी मणिमाला और 1600 वीरांगनाएँ
छोटे से किले में बारूद और बंदूक की गर्जना के बीच, 1528 की उस रात चंदेरी ने अपने भीतर एक निश्चय समेट लिया। जब बाबर की सेनाएँ चारों ओर से घेर आईं और पतन सुनिश्चित हो गया, तब रानी मणिमाला ने एक ऐसा संकेत दिया कि 1600 वीरांगनाएँ सदियों तक अमर हो गईं। उन्होंने जौहर कर, आग में समर्पण किया ताकि बेइज़्ज़ती से कहीं बढ़कर उनके लिए मरना ही सम्मान हो।
यह घटना 28 जनवरी 1528 की रात हुई, जब चंदेरी पर बाबर ने हमला किया। महाराज मेदिनीराय ने अंतिम क्षणों तक युद्ध किया, पर किले के टूटने पर रानी मणिमाला ने मिलरिया ताल के किनारे विशाल चंदा में 1600 महिलाओं के साथ अग्नि में समर्पण कर दिया। वह लपटें आज भी इतिहास में गूंजती हैं।
ग्वालियर नरेश जीवाजी राव शिंदे के शासनकाल में (विक्रम संवत् 1588) इस घटना की स्मृति में जौहर स्मारक बनवाया गया। इसमें तीन दृश्य उकेरे गए हैं—नीचे रानियों का जौहर, बीच में बाबर और मेदिनी राय का युद्ध और ऊपर शिव-पूजन का दृश्य। यह स्मारक आज भी चंदेरी के साहस और बलिदान का प्रतीक है।
