According to local historical tradition and temple records, the temple was commissioned in 1664 CE by Raja Shyam Sen of the Suket Kingdom. The deity worshipped here is Mahunag, whom local belief identifies with Lord Karna, the son of Surya (the Sun God) from the Mahabharata.
The most enduring story associated with this shrine comes from regional legend. Raja Shyam Sen is believed to have been imprisoned during the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. In captivity, the king prayed fervently to Mahunag for deliverance. Tradition holds that the deity manifested in the form of a bee, guiding the king during a decisive game of chess, through which Shyam Sen won his freedom. In gratitude, the king is said to have vowed half of his kingdom to Mahunag — a pledge that led to the construction of this temple.
Architecturally, the temple follows the traditional Pahari style, using wood, stone, and sloping roofs suited to the Himalayan climate. The setting overlooks the Karsog Valley, reinforcing the sense that this shrine was meant to exist in harmony with nature rather than dominate it.
Even today, Mahunag Temple holds a powerful place in local belief. Devotees come seeking resolution of family disputes, legal matters, and personal crises. Offerings of silver are customary — a practice deeply rooted in regional ritual culture. A significant annual fair on Makar Sankranti draws devotees from across Himachal, while Sundays are traditionally considered especially auspicious.
The temple has also undergone careful restoration in recent years, ensuring that while the structure remains protected, its spiritual atmosphere remains untouched — living faith rather than frozen monument.

स्थानीय ऐतिहासिक परंपराओं और मंदिर कथाओं के अनुसार, इस मंदिर का निर्माण 1664 ईस्वी में सुकेत रियासत के राजा श्याम सेन द्वारा कराया गया था। यहाँ पूजित देवता महुनाग को लोकमान्यता में महाभारत के सूर्यपुत्र कर्ण के रूप में देखा जाता है।
मंदिर से जुड़ी सबसे प्रसिद्ध कथा एक लोकविश्वास पर आधारित है। कहा जाता है कि मुगल सम्राट औरंगज़ेब के शासनकाल में राजा श्याम सेन को बंदी बना लिया गया था। कठिन समय में उन्होंने महुनाग देव से प्रार्थना की। मान्यता है कि देवता ने भ्रमर (मधुमक्खी) के रूप में प्रकट होकर राजा को शतरंज के खेल में मार्गदर्शन दिया, जिसके कारण राजा को मुक्ति मिली। कृतज्ञता स्वरूप राजा ने अपने राज्य का आधा भाग महुनाग देव को अर्पित करने का संकल्प लिया और इसी प्रतिज्ञा से इस मंदिर का निर्माण हुआ।
मंदिर की वास्तुकला पारंपरिक पहाड़ी शैली में निर्मित है — लकड़ी, पत्थर और ढलवाँ छतें, जो हिमालयी वातावरण के अनुरूप हैं। यहाँ से दिखाई देने वाली करसोग घाटी मंदिर के आध्यात्मिक वातावरण को और गहराई देती है।
आज भी महुनाग मंदिर को पारिवारिक विवादों, न्यायिक मामलों और जीवन की उलझनों के समाधान के लिए विशेष रूप से पूजित माना जाता है। भक्त यहाँ चाँदी का चढ़ावा अर्पित करते हैं। मकर संक्रांति पर लगने वाला वार्षिक मेला दूर-दूर से श्रद्धालुओं को आकर्षित करता है, और रविवार को विशेष पूजा का दिन माना जाता है।
हाल के वर्षों में मंदिर का संरक्षण एवं जीर्णोद्धार किया गया है, जिससे इसकी ऐतिहासिक पहचान सुरक्षित रहते हुए इसकी आध्यात्मिक चेतना बनी रही है।
