High on the eastern ramparts of Jhansi Fort rests a legendary cannon that became the pride of Rani Lakshmibai’s defence — Kadak Bijli. Its name, meaning “Thunderbolt” or “Crackling Lightning”, came from the terrifying roar it unleashed each time it fired, a sound so deafening that enemy ranks would tremble in fear.
The cannon was built in the 18th century during the reign of Raja Gangadhar Rao, and in 1857 it gained immortality. Under the skilled hands of Ghous Khan, one of Rani’s most loyal artillery commanders, Kadak Bijli became the frontline weapon of resistance. For two whole weeks, it and the forces it shielded successfully repelled the mighty British East India Company from breaching the fort.
Kadak Bijli is no ordinary relic. It is 5.50 metres long, 1.8 metres high, with a diameter of 0.6 metres — its massive scale befitting its thunderous reputation. Its front bears the carving of a lion’s head, and most striking of all, a cannonball still remains lodged in its barrel — a rare survival, making it appear even today as if ready to roar once more.
Every visitor to Jhansi who stands before this cannon does not just see iron and stone — they hear echoes of defiance, courage, and sacrifice. Kadak Bijli is the voice of Rani Lakshmibai’s Jhansi, still alive in silent thunder.

झाँसी किले की पूर्वी प्राचीर पर आज भी खड़ी है एक ऐसी तोप, जिसने अंग्रेज़ों के दिलों में दहशत भर दी थी — कड़क बिजली। इसका नाम ही इसकी पहचान है। जब यह दहाड़ती थी, तो उसकी आवाज़ बिजली की गड़गड़ाहट जैसी लगती थी, जिससे दुश्मन थर-थर कांप उठते थे।
18वीं शताब्दी में राजा गंगाधर राव के समय में बनी यह तोप, 1857 के स्वतंत्रता संग्राम में रानी लक्ष्मीबाई का सबसे बड़ा हथियार बनी। इसे रानी के वफ़ादार तोपची ग़ुलाम गौस ख़ान ने संभाला और इस तोप की गर्जना ने अंग्रेज़ों की चढ़ाई को रोके रखा। पूरे दो सप्ताह तक, कड़क बिजली और झाँसी की सेना ने अंग्रेज़ी फौज को किले में घुसने नहीं दिया।
इस तोप की बनावट भी उतनी ही अद्भुत है जितनी इसकी कहानी। यह 5.50 मीटर लंबी, 1.8 मीटर ऊँची और 0.6 मीटर व्यास वाली है। इसके अग्रभाग पर सिंह की आकृति बनी है और सबसे अनोखी बात यह है कि इसकी नाल में आज भी एक गोला फँसा हुआ है — युद्धकालीन धरोहर का जीवंत प्रमाण।
कड़क बिजली केवल तोप नहीं है, बल्कि साहस और बलिदान की गाथा है। यह आज भी रानी लक्ष्मीबाई की झाँसी की शौर्यगाथा सुनाती है — गूंजती हुई, अनसुनी, पर अमर।
