There are homes that outlive their inhabitants… and then there are homes that outlive centuries.
In Dadon of Aligarh district, Uttar Pradesh, this imposing haveli stands as a surviving chapter of the Sherwanis of Bhikampur. Its long arcade of arches stretches across the façade, the domed corner chhatris rise with quiet authority, and the thick brick masonry carries the weight of nearly two centuries.
This structure represents the male residential portion — the mardana — of the estate. The separate female quarters, once part of the architectural complex, no longer survive.
The lineage traces back to Nawab Baz Khan of Bhikampur, remembered in regional genealogical accounts as a benevolent and charitable ruler who passed away in 1830 at the age of eighty. His son, Haji Ghulam Mohammed Khan, received the Dadon area in 1837 and, according to documented family historical records, commissioned this haveli in the same year. The Sherwani family later settled in Aligarh.
Architecturally, the haveli reflects mid-19th century Indo-Islamic rural elite aesthetics — repetitive cusped arches, elevated verandahs for shade, symmetrical façade planning, thick lime-plastered brick walls, and domed turrets that anchor the skyline. The design language aligns with taluqdari residences of western Uttar Pradesh during the colonial period.
Today the corridors are silent, the plaster has weathered, and vegetation touches the threshold — yet the structure retains its dignity. Not abandoned, but paused. Not forgotten, but waiting to be remembered correctly.

कुछ घर अपने लोगों से भी ज़्यादा लंबी उम्र जीते हैं।
उत्तर प्रदेश के अलीगढ़ ज़िले के दादों क्षेत्र में स्थित यह भव्य हवेली भिकमपुर के शेरवानी वंश की विरासत का जीवित प्रमाण है। सामने की लंबी मेहराबदार श्रेणी, कोनों पर गुम्बदनुमा छतरियाँ और मोटी ईंट-चूने की दीवारें लगभग दो सदियों की कहानी समेटे खड़ी हैं।
यह भवन उस ज़माने के मर्दाना हिस्से का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है। स्त्रियों के लिए बना अलग ज़नाना भाग अब अस्तित्व में नहीं है।
वंशावली के अनुसार इसका संबंध नवाब बाज़ ख़ान भिकमपुर से है, जिन्हें परोपकारी और उदार शासक के रूप में याद किया जाता है। उनका देहांत 1830 में हुआ। उनके पुत्र हाजी गुलाम मोहम्मद ख़ान को 1837 में दादों क्षेत्र प्राप्त हुआ और पारिवारिक ऐतिहासिक अभिलेखों के अनुसार उसी वर्ष इस हवेली का निर्माण कराया गया। बाद में शेरवानी परिवार अलीगढ़ में बस गया।
वास्तुशिल्प की दृष्टि से यह हवेली उन्नीसवीं सदी की ग्रामीण अभिजात शैली को दर्शाती है — दोहराव वाली मेहराबें, ऊँचे बरामदे, सममित अग्रभाग, चूना-प्लास्टर की दीवारें और गुम्बददार बुर्ज। यह शैली पश्चिमी उत्तर प्रदेश के तालुकेदार आवासों से मेल खाती है।
आज यहाँ सन्नाटा है, पर गरिमा अब भी शेष है। यह खंडहर नहीं — इतिहास का ठहरा हुआ अध्याय है।
