Hidden quietly inside Lodi Gardens, the Khairpur Bridge, better known as Athpula, is a rare surviving structure from the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar in the late 16th century. Built by Nawab Bahadur, a noble associated with Akbar’s administration, this bridge once carried a flowing tributary connected to the Yamuna river system.
The name Athpula literally means “eight-pillared bridge.” True to its name, the structure rests on eight massive stone piers forming seven graceful arches, each carefully proportioned to withstand water currents while maintaining symmetry. During its time, the bridge served as a vital connector between surrounding villages such as Khairpur, Pilanji, Jodbagh, Kotla, and Aliganj.
Over centuries, the river gradually dried up, leaving behind a canal and reservoir, but the bridge endured. Today, Athpula stands as one of the very few monuments in Delhi dating specifically to Akbar’s reign, silently narrating stories of Mughal engineering, village life, and Delhi’s layered past. नई दिल्ली के लोधी गार्डन्स के भीतर स्थित खैरपुर पुल, जिसे अठपुला कहा जाता है, मुगल सम्राट अकबर के शासनकाल का एक दुर्लभ स्मारक है। इसका निर्माण अकबर के समय में नवाब बहादुर द्वारा कराया गया था। यह पुल कभी यमुना से जुड़ी एक जलधारा पर बना था, जो आसपास के गांवों को जोड़ता था।
