Inside the mighty Mehrangarh Fort, beyond its battlements and royal palaces, lies a sacred space that shaped the spiritual life of Marwar’s rulers — the Nagnechi Mata Temple.
Historically, Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur and Mehrangarh Fort, is believed to have established a place of worship for Nagnechi Mata within the fort. As the Kuldevi of the Rathore clan, her presence inside the fort symbolised divine protection over the kingdom, the royal family, and the city itself.
According to Rathore tradition, the idol of Nagnechi Mata was originally brought by Rao Dhuhad in the 14th century and first worshipped at Nagana (in present-day Barmer region). When Mehrangarh rose above Jodhpur’s skyline, the goddess was enshrined within the fort so that the ruler and royal household could offer prayers before warfare, governance, and auspicious occasions.
Mehrangarh was not merely a military stronghold. With the worship of Nagnechi Mata and Chamunda Mata, it also functioned as a spiritual centre where faith and kingship were deeply intertwined. Even today, the temple stands as a quiet reminder that power in Marwar was believed to flow as much from divine grace as from swords and stone.

मेहरानगढ़ किले में माँ नागनेची माता का मंदिर
जोधपुर के मेहरानगढ़ किले के भीतर स्थित माँ नागनेची माता का मंदिर केवल एक पूजा-स्थल नहीं, बल्कि मारवाड़ के राठौड़ शासकों की आस्था का केंद्र रहा है।
इतिहास और राठौड़ परंपराओं के अनुसार, जोधपुर के संस्थापक राव जोधा ने किले के भीतर कुलदेवी माँ नागनेचीजी की उपासना की व्यवस्था करवाई। माना जाता है कि माँ नागनेचीजी की निरंतर उपस्थिति से राज्य, राजपरिवार और किले को दैवी संरक्षण प्राप्त होता था।
राठौड़ परंपरा के अनुसार, माँ नागनेचीजी की मूर्ति 14वीं शताब्दी में नागाणा क्षेत्र (वर्तमान बाड़मेर) में स्थापित की गई थी और बाद में मेहरानगढ़ किले में उनका पूजा-स्थल बना। युद्ध, राज्यकार्य और शुभ अवसरों से पहले यहाँ पूजा करना शासकों की परंपरा थी।
मेहरानगढ़ किला इस प्रकार केवल सैन्य दुर्ग नहीं, बल्कि धार्मिक-आध्यात्मिक केंद्र भी रहा, जहाँ शक्ति और श्रद्धा साथ-साथ चलती थीं।
