Tucked quietly within the old quarters of Jodhpur lies Toorji’s Stepwell — a graceful reminder of how water, architecture, and royal patronage once shaped desert cities. Built in the 1740s by Toorji Devi, a queen of Maharaja Abhay Singh of Marwar, this stepwell followed a long-standing Rajput tradition where royal women commissioned public water structures for community welfare.
Designed as a jhalra, the stepwell descends through seven levels, carved primarily in local sandstone. Each level reveals changing architectural rhythms — from broad steps and arched niches above to finely carved stone details deeper within. Unlike ornate temple tanks, Toorji’s Stepwell balances utility with restraint, reflecting the practical genius of Marwar’s water architecture.
For centuries, this space offered relief from Jodhpur’s harsh climate — a cool refuge where people gathered water, rested, and found quiet shelter from the desert heat. Today, restored and revived, the stepwell remains a contemplative pause amid the city’s bustle, where light, stone, and water still converse softly.

जोधपुर के पुराने शहर की गलियों में स्थित तोरजी की बावड़ी राजस्थान की जल-संरचना परंपरा का एक सजीव उदाहरण है। इसका निर्माण 1740 के दशक में महाराजा अभय सिंह की रानी तोरजी देवी द्वारा कराया गया था। मरुस्थलीय क्षेत्र में जल संरक्षण के लिए राजघराने की महिलाओं द्वारा बावड़ियों का निर्माण एक प्रचलित परंपरा थी, और तोरजी की बावड़ी उसी परंपरा की एक सशक्त कड़ी है।
