In the quiet town of Bundi, where blue houses rise against the Aravalli hills and palaces whisper stories of valor, stands an extraordinary memorial — the Chaurasi Khambon Ki Chhatri.
Commissioned in 1683 by Rao Raja Anirudh Singh of the Hada Chauhan dynasty, this cenotaph was not built for a king, nor for a fallen warrior. It was built in memory of Deva, the son of a royal wet nurse — a foster brother deeply respected within the palace.
Unlike most Rajput chhatris that glorify martial heroism, this structure reflects something rarer — gratitude and loyalty honored beyond lineage. The very act of raising such a monumental structure for someone of non-royal birth speaks volumes about Bundi’s socio-cultural ethos in the 17th century.
Architecturally, the monument is a masterpiece of Rajput funerary design. Eighty-four intricately carved pillars support a grand domed canopy, forming a rhythmic forest of stone. Beneath this canopy rests a Shiva lingam, lending the structure a sanctified aura. Though technically a cenotaph, many visitors often mistake it for a temple due to its devotional ambiance.
Over centuries, the monument has retained not only its architectural integrity but also its cultural memory. Oral traditions in Bundi recount that members of the royal household would occasionally visit to pay homage. Even today, locals offer flowers or light lamps here, especially on full moon nights.
Chaurasi Khambon Ki Chhatri stands not merely as stone and symmetry — but as a reminder that honor, respect, and remembrance can transcend royal blood.

राजस्थान के Bundi नगर में, जहाँ पहाड़ियाँ इतिहास की कहानियाँ सुनाती हैं, वहीं स्थित है चौरासी खम्भों की छतरी — एक अनोखा स्मारक।
इसका निर्माण 1683 में Rao Raja Anirudh Singh द्वारा कराया गया था। यह किसी राजा या वीर योद्धा की स्मृति में नहीं, बल्कि देवा नामक उस व्यक्ति की याद में बना, जो राजपरिवार की धाय माँ का पुत्र और महाराजा का पालन-भाई था।
राजपूत स्थापत्य में अधिकांश छतरियाँ युद्धवीरों के लिए बनती थीं, परंतु यह स्मारक कृतज्ञता और सम्मान का प्रतीक है। यह दर्शाता है कि 17वीं शताब्दी की बूंदी में निष्ठा और सेवा को भी राजसम्मान प्राप्त हो सकता था।
इस छतरी की स्थापत्य भव्यता अद्भुत है। चौरासी सुंदर नक्काशीदार स्तंभ विशाल गुंबद को थामे हुए हैं। मध्य में स्थित शिवलिंग इसे आध्यात्मिक आभा प्रदान करता है। यद्यपि यह एक स्मारक है, किंतु इसकी पवित्रता के कारण इसे अक्सर मंदिर समझ लिया जाता है।
आज भी स्थानीय लोग पूर्णिमा की रात यहाँ दीप जलाते हैं और श्रद्धा अर्पित करते हैं। यह स्मारक केवल पत्थरों का समूह नहीं, बल्कि सम्मान और स्मृति का जीवंत प्रतीक है।
