History of the Govind Dev Ji Temple, Vrindavan. The Govind Dev Ji Temple in Vrindavan, near Mathura, was built around 1590 AD by Raja Man Singh I, a commander under Mughal Emperor Akbar. Akbar donated the distinctive red sandstone used in its construction, and the temple originally rose to seven stories, featuring a marble, silver, and gold altar, and an elaborately sculpted lotus ceiling . In 1670, during Emperor Aurangzeb’s reign, the temple was partially destroyed—reducing it to three surviving stories . To preserve the sacred deity, the original idol of Govind Dev Ji was moved to Jaipur; a replica is now worshipped in Vrindavan .
