On the quiet banks of the Chambal River near Kota stands a temple whose stones have witnessed more than thirteen centuries of history. Known as the Kansua Temple, or Karneshwar Mahadev, this shrine is one of the earliest surviving temples of the Hadoti region of Rajasthan.
The temple’s most important historical clue lies in a stone inscription discovered here. It records that the shrine was built in Vikrama Samvat 795 (738 CE) during the reign of Dhavalappadeva, a regional ruler associated with the Maurya lineage that governed parts of the Kota region in the early medieval period.
Architecturally, the temple reflects the early Nagara style, with its sanctum, antarala and mandapa aligned toward the east. Inside the sanctum stands the temple’s most remarkable feature — a rare Chaturmukhi Shivling, a four-faced form of Lord Shiva symbolising his cosmic manifestations.
Yet Kansua Temple is remembered for a phenomenon that feels almost poetic. As the sun rises over the Chambal landscape, the first ray of sunlight travels directly into the sanctum and touches the head of the Shivling, creating the belief that Surya himself performs the morning abhishek of Mahadev.
Local traditions also associate this land with Rishi Kanva’s ancient hermitage and the childhood legends of Bharata, the son of Shakuntala and King Dushyanta — the same Bharata after whom India is believed to be named.
Standing between history and legend, Kansua Temple continues to echo the spiritual and architectural legacy of early medieval India.

कोटा शहर के निकट चंबल नदी के तट पर स्थित कंसुआ मंदिर, जिसे कर्णेश्वर महादेव मंदिर भी कहा जाता है, राजस्थान के हाड़ौती क्षेत्र के सबसे प्राचीन मंदिरों में से एक माना जाता है। इसकी पत्थर की दीवारों में लगभग तेरह सौ वर्षों का इतिहास समाया हुआ है।
मंदिर परिसर में प्राप्त शिलालेख के अनुसार इसका निर्माण विक्रम संवत 795 (738 ईस्वी) में हुआ था। इस शिलालेख में उस समय के शासक धवलप्पदेव का उल्लेख मिलता है, जिन्हें इतिहासकार कोटा क्षेत्र पर शासन करने वाले मौर्य वंश से सम्बद्ध क्षेत्रीय शासक मानते हैं।
नागर शैली में निर्मित इस मंदिर का गर्भगृह, अंतराल और मंडप पूर्वाभिमुख हैं। मंदिर के गर्भगृह में स्थापित दुर्लभ चतुर्मुखी शिवलिंग इसकी सबसे अनूठी पहचान है, जिसमें भगवान शिव के चार मुख अंकित हैं।
कंसुआ मंदिर की एक विशेष परंपरा भी प्रसिद्ध है। सूर्योदय के समय सूर्य की पहली किरण सीधे मंदिर के गर्भगृह में प्रवेश कर शिवलिंग के मस्तक को स्पर्श करती है। श्रद्धालु इसे सूर्य देव द्वारा महादेव के अभिषेक के रूप में देखते हैं।
स्थानीय लोकमान्यताओं के अनुसार यह क्षेत्र कभी ऋषि कण्व की तपोस्थली रहा और यहीं दुष्यंत और शकुंतला के पुत्र भरत का बाल्यकाल बीता था, जिनके नाम पर हमारे देश का नाम “भारत” माना जाता है।
इतिहास और लोककथाओं के बीच खड़ा कंसुआ मंदिर आज भी भारत की प्राचीन आध्यात्मिक और स्थापत्य परंपरा का जीवित प्रतीक है।
