Located in the Sabun/Sawan Katra area of Agra, Masjid Kalan is believed to be the city’s first Jama Masjid. According to one historical reference, it was built during the reign of Sultan Sikandar Lodi using the remains of demolished Jain and Hindu temples, making it one of the oldest mosques in Agra.
Another theory attributes its construction to Muzaffar Hussain Safavi, a prominent noble in Emperor Akbar’s court. Interestingly, the grave of the person who commissioned the mosque lies beneath its basement.
While there is no conclusive evidence to claim it as Agra’s first mosque, it is widely accepted as the first Jama Masjid of the city—representing Agra’s layered cultural and architectural history.
मस्जिद कलान(सावन कटरा), आगरा — शहर की पहली जामा मस्जिद मानी जाती है
आगरा के साबुन/सावन कटरा क्षेत्र में स्थित मस्जिद कलान को शहर की पहली जामा मस्जिद माना जाता है। एक ऐतिहासिक स्रोत के अनुसार, इसे सुल्तान सिकंदर लोदी के शासनकाल में जैन और हिंदू मंदिरों के अवशेषों से बनवाया गया था, जिससे यह आगरा की सबसे पुरानी मस्जिदों में से एक मानी जाती है।
एक अन्य मतानुसार, इसे अकबर के दरबार के प्रमुख अमीर मुज़फ़्फ़र हुसैन सफ़वी ने बनवाया था। विशेष बात यह है कि इसे बनवाने वाले की कब्र मस्जिद के तहखाने में स्थित है।
यद्यपि यह कहना कठिन है कि यह आगरा की पहली मस्जिद थी, परन्तु इसे शहर की पहली जामा मस्जिद कहना गलत नहीं होगा। यह मस्जिद आगरा की ऐतिहासिक और सांस्कृतिक विरासत की झलक प्रस्तुत करती है।
