On the banks of the Betwa River at Orchha, a silent row of cenotaphs rises along Kanchan Ghat. These are the chhatris of the Bundela kings — memorials of rulers whose reigns shaped the destiny of Orchha. Among them stands the Chhatri of Maharaja Pahar Singh, who ruled from 1641 to 1663 CE. After his death, his son Sujan Singh built this monument in his honour.
The chhatri is not a tomb, but a symbolic remembrance, marking his legacy among his ancestors. Its architecture mirrors the Indo-Mughal style of Orchha’s cenotaphs: elevated platforms, open pillared halls, multiple storeys, and graceful domes. Reflected in the river’s waters, the structure seems to converse with both the heavens above and the history beneath.
Together with the chhatris of Bir Singh Deo, Madhukar Shah, and others, it forms an extraordinary riverside complex. These monuments stand as enduring symbols of Bundela pride, their stone silhouettes keeping alive the story of Orchha’s royal past.

बेतवा नदी के किनारे, ऑरछा के कंचन घाट पर शांति से खड़ी हैं बुंदेला राजाओं की छतरियाँ। ये स्मारक उन शासकों की याद में बने हैं जिन्होंने ऑरछा के इतिहास को दिशा दी। इन्हीं में एक है महाराजा पहार सिंह की छतरी, जिन्होंने 1641 से 1663 ईस्वी तक शासन किया। उनकी मृत्यु के बाद उनके पुत्र सुजान सिंह ने उनकी स्मृति में यह छतरी बनवाई।
यह छतरी समाधि नहीं, बल्कि एक प्रतीक है, जो उनकी विरासत को अमर करती है। इसकी वास्तुकला बुंदेला और इंडो-मुग़ल शैली का सुंदर संगम है — ऊँचे मंच, खुले स्तंभ, कई मंज़िलें और आकर्षक गुंबद। जब इसकी परछाई बेतवा की लहरों पर पड़ती है, तो लगता है जैसे इतिहास और वर्तमान एक साथ सांस ले रहे हों।
बीर सिंह देव, माधुकर शाह और अन्य शासकों की छतरियों के साथ यह समूह एक अद्भुत धरोहर है। ये पत्थरों की छतरियाँ आज भी बुंदेला गौरव और ऑरछा की राजसी गाथा सुनाती हैं।
