The Forgotten Guardian of the Mughal Harem — Sati-un-Nissa.
Tucked near the outer quadrangle of the Taj Mahal lies a quiet but historically rich tomb — that of Sati-un-Nissa, an Indo-Persian scholar, Quran teacher, physician, and a powerful figure in the Mughal court.
Born in Persia before 1580, she arrived in India after her brother Taleb Amoli’s death and raised his daughters. With her grace and intellect, she rose to become lady-in-waiting to Mumtaz Mahal, tutor to Jahanara Begum, and mahal-dar (chief matron) of the Mughal harem. She also held the title of Sadr-i-Nath, overseeing welfare grants for widows, scholars, and poor women.
After Mumtaz’s death in 1631, Sati-un-Nissa escorted her body to Agra for burial. It is said that Shah Jahan, overwhelmed with grief, could not bear to see his newborn daughter Gauhar Ara, who was then lovingly raised by Sati-un-Nissa.
Later, her own daughter died in childbirth, and a devastated Sati-un-Nissa passed away shortly after in 1647 in Lahore. Shah Jahan ordered Rs. 10,000 to be spent on her funeral, and a year later, her body was brought to Agra and buried in a specially built tomb near the Taj Mahal, east of the Fatehpuri Mosque.

मुग़ल हरम की संरक्षिका — सती-उन-निस्सा
ताजमहल के बाहरी प्रांगण के पास एक शांत किन्तु ऐतिहासिक मक़बरा स्थित है — सती-उन-निस्सा का, जो एक ईरानी विदुषी, कुरान पाठ शिक्षिका, वैद्य और मुग़ल दरबार की प्रभावशाली महिला थीं।
1580 से पहले ईरान के अमोल में जन्मी सती-उन-निस्सा अपने भाई तालेब अमोली की मृत्यु के बाद भारत आईं और उनकी बेटियों का पालन-पोषण किया। उनकी विद्वता ने उन्हें मुमताज़ महल की प्रमुख सहायिका, जहानआरा बेगम की शिक्षिका, और शाहजहाँ के महल की महलदार बनाया। साथ ही वे सदर-ए-नाथ के पद पर भी रहीं, जहां वे विधवाओं, विद्वानों और निर्धन महिलाओं को अनुदान देने का कार्य करती थीं।
मुमताज़ की मृत्यु के बाद सती-उन-निस्सा ने उनके पार्थिव शरीर को आगरा पहुंचाया। कहा जाता है कि शोकग्रस्त शाहजहाँ अपनी नवजात पुत्री गौहर आरा को देखने तक की स्थिति में नहीं थे, जिसे सती-उन-निस्सा ने अपने स्नेह से पाला।
बाद में उनकी अपनी पुत्री की मृत्यु प्रसव के दौरान हो गई, जिसके ग़म में सती-उन-निस्सा का निधन 1647 में लाहौर में हो गया। शाहजहाँ ने उनके अंतिम संस्कार पर 10,000 रुपये खर्च करने का आदेश दिया, और एक वर्ष बाद उनका पार्थिव शरीर आगरा लाया गया, जहां ताजमहल के पास उनके लिए विशेष मक़बरा बनवाया गया।
एक ऐसी महान महिला को नमन, जो पर्दे के पीछे से मुग़ल साम्राज्य की आत्मा बनी रहीं।
