The Marble Memory of Marwar
Standing quietly near Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada is often called the “Taj Mahal of Marwar”—not for its scale, but for its emotion. This luminous white marble memorial was commissioned by Maharaja Sardar Singh in memory of his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II of Jodhpur, who ruled from 1873 until his death in 1895.
Construction began in 1899 and the memorial was completed in 1906. Built from finely polished Makrana marble, the structure glows softly under the desert sun, its delicately carved jalis allowing light to pass through like breath. The central hall is designed in the manner of a temple, where ritual worship is still performed—reflecting the Rajput tradition of ancestor veneration.
More than a cenotaph, Jaswant Thada serves as the royal cremation ground of the Marwar rulers. Today, it is preserved and managed by the Mehrangarh Museum Trust, which also operates a small museum inside the complex. Portraits of Marwar rulers displayed here help visitors trace the political and cultural journey of the region.
Its landscaped gardens and tranquil atmosphere have also made Jaswant Thada a cultural space. Morning concerts during festivals such as the Rajasthan International Folk Festival and the World Sacred Spirit Festival turn this memorial into a living dialogue between history, music, and memory.

मारवाड़ की संगमरमर में गढ़ी स्मृति
मेहरानगढ़ किले की छाया में स्थित जसवंत थड़ा को यूँ ही “मारवाड़ का ताजमहल” नहीं कहा जाता। यह भव्य संगमरमर का स्मारक महाराजा सरदार सिंह द्वारा अपने पिता महाराजा जसवंत सिंह द्वितीय की स्मृति में बनवाया गया था। 1899 में आरंभ हुआ इसका निर्माण 1906 में पूर्ण हुआ।
मकराना के श्वेत संगमरमर से निर्मित यह स्मारक अपनी नाज़ुक जालियों, पारदर्शी दीवारों और शांत वातावरण के लिए प्रसिद्ध है। इसका मुख्य सभागृह मंदिर की भांति निर्मित है, जहाँ आज भी पूजा-अनुष्ठान होते हैं—जो राजपूत वंशों में पूर्वज-पूजन की परंपरा को दर्शाता है।
जसवंत थड़ा मारवाड़ के शासकों का राजकीय दाह-संस्कार स्थल भी रहा है। वर्तमान में इसका संरक्षण मेहरानगढ़ म्यूज़ियम ट्रस्ट द्वारा किया जा रहा है। परिसर में स्थित संग्रहालय में मारवाड़ के शासकों के चित्र और ऐतिहासिक विवरण प्रदर्शित हैं, जो क्षेत्र के इतिहास को समझने में सहायक हैं।
लोक संगीत और आध्यात्मिक आयोजनों के दौरान, यह स्थल स्मारक से आगे बढ़कर संस्कृति और संवेदना का मंच बन जाता है।
