Near Meerut city, in the quiet village of Pura in Baleni area of Baghpat district, stands a temple that breathes faith more than stone — Puramahadev Temple. Revered as an ancient Siddhpeeth by devotees, this shrine is deeply rooted in Puranic tradition rather than documented medieval architecture.
According to Hindu belief, this land is associated with Maharishi Yamdagni, his wife Renuka, and their son Bhagwan Parashurama — the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu. The legend narrates that King Sahastrabahu once visited the ashram of Yamdagni and was hosted through the divine cow Kamdhenu. When the king attempted to seize Kamdhenu and later abducted Renuka, a tragic chain of events unfolded. Under his father’s command, Parashurama beheaded his own mother — an act of obedience that filled him with unbearable remorse.
It is believed that at this very site, Parashurama established a Shivlinga and performed intense penance to Lord Shiva. Pleased with his devotion, Shiva restored Renuka to life and granted Parashurama the divine axe (Parashu), blessing him with invincibility. Tradition further says he later used that axe in his legendary 21 campaigns against oppressive Kshatriya rulers.
While the current temple structure reflects later reconstruction, local oral history speaks of a queen whose royal caravan once halted mysteriously at this spot. Excavation revealed a Shivling beneath the earth, after which the temple was rebuilt in grandeur.
Today, Puramahadev remains a powerful center of devotion, especially during Shravan month and Shivratri, when thousands gather in faith. Whether one sees it as mythology or spiritual memory, the temple stands as a living bridge between epic narrative and present belief.

मेरठ शहर के समीप, बागपत जिले के बालैनी क्षेत्र के छोटे से गाँव पुरा में स्थित है आस्था का एक प्राचीन केन्द्र – पुरामहादेव मंदिर। इसे एक सिद्धपीठ माना जाता है और इसकी कथा पुराणों तथा स्थानीय परंपराओं से जुड़ी है।
मान्यता है कि यही वह स्थान है जहाँ महर्षि यमदग्नि अपनी पत्नी माता रेणुका और पुत्र भगवान परशुराम के साथ निवास करते थे। पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, हस्तिनापुर के राजा सहस्रबाहु आश्रम में आए और कामधेनु की कृपा से उनका सत्कार हुआ। बाद में कामधेनु को प्राप्त करने के प्रयास और माता रेणुका के अपहरण से घटनाओं की एक दुखद श्रृंखला प्रारंभ हुई।
ऋषि के आदेश पर भगवान परशुराम ने अपनी ही माता का वध किया, किंतु पश्चाताप से व्याकुल होकर उन्होंने इसी स्थान पर शिवलिंग की स्थापना कर भगवान शिव की कठोर तपस्या की। प्रसन्न होकर शिव ने माता रेणुका को पुनः जीवनदान दिया और परशुराम को दिव्य फरसा प्रदान किया। परंपरा के अनुसार, इसी फरसे से उन्होंने अत्याचारी क्षत्रियों के विरुद्ध 21 बार अभियान चलाए।
वर्तमान मंदिर का ढांचा बाद के काल में निर्मित माना जाता है। स्थानीय लोककथा कहती है कि एक रानी का काफिला यहाँ रुक गया और खुदाई में शिवलिंग प्राप्त हुआ, जिसके बाद भव्य मंदिर का निर्माण कराया गया।
आज भी श्रावण मास और महाशिवरात्रि पर यहाँ विशाल श्रद्धालु समागम होता है। यह स्थल इतिहास से अधिक आस्था और परंपरा का जीवंत प्रतीक है।
