Along the sacred waters of the Betwa River’s Kanchan Ghat in Orchha stands one of the most poignant cenotaphs — the Chhatri of Maharaja Madhukar Shah, a Bundela king remembered for his devotion to Lord Krishna and his resistance against the Mughal empire. Madhukar Shah reigned Orchha from 1554 to 1592 AD, succeeding his brother Bharti Chand. His long rule coincided with the powerful era of Akbar, and he often found himself defending Orchha from Mughal incursions. Historical records note invasions in 1577 and again in 1591, when he was finally forced into exile. He retreated into the jungles, where he died of natural causes, while his son Ram Shah later ascended the throne with Akbar’s consent. The cenotaph built in his memory reflects the Indo-Mughal style — a three-storied, open structure supported on pillars, crowned by a dome.
