Within the quiet grounds of the Lucknow Residency stands a modest stone cross — a memorial that carries the weight of one of 1857’s most defining moments. Placed in front of the museum building, this cross marks the memory of Major General Sir John Eardley Wilmot Inglis and his wife, and silently recalls the long, desperate months of the Siege of Lucknow.
When the uprising erupted and the Residency was surrounded, command fell unexpectedly onto Inglis after Sir Henry Lawrence succumbed to his injuries in July 1857. With limited resources, dwindling supplies, rising casualties, and constant bombardment, Inglis held the Residency for nearly 87 days. His leadership kept hope alive within the besieged compound until relief finally arrived.
Inglis never fully recovered from the wounds and strain of that defence. He died in 1862, and this cross — though simple and understated — remains a lasting witness to his role in one of the most turbulent chapters of Lucknow’s history. Paired with the larger memorial to Sir Henry Lawrence, it completes the story of two men whose decisions shaped the fate of the Residency during the revolt.
